Sony: Project Morpheus VR headset is 85% ready

Sony is expected to release its virtual reality headset code-named Morpheus sometimes in 2015. Apparently, the device is nearly ready. Last week the company displayed its VR hardware at the Tokyo Game Show and the product was well received by gamers, which confirms the fact that its development is basically finished.

Shuhei Yoshida, the president of Sony's Worldwide Studios who leads development of the project Morpheus, said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, that the company had “finished 85 per cent of the work needed to make the product available”. Unfortunately, the high-ranking executive declined to say when Sony plans to launch the VR headset and how much it would cost.

Mr. Yoshida confirmed that many components used to build smartphones are also used by project Morpheus, including high-resolution display, sensors for control and other. Usage of components that are already mass produced suggests that the price of the device will not be too high.

While the Morpheus virtual reality headset may be ready, games that take advantage of the VR gear are still in development. It remains to be seen whether Sony and its partners manage to get VR games to the market next year.

KitGuru Says: When it comes to VR, software may be considerably more important than hardware itself. Today only a handful of game developers understand how to design VR games. As a result, it is hard to expect a lot of VR titles next year.

  1. i am really looking forward to this new technology. i hope sonys and oculus’ vr-products will be good, so that there is not just one hyped product but two. maybe they will be affordable when each of them has an equal opponent.

  2. Isn’t Sony skint???
