Apple quietly removes iPod Classic from store

Apple has quietly said goodbye to the iPod Classic, having removed it from the Apple store shortly after the iPhone six and iWatch devices were announced. The iPod section of the store now only shows the iPod Touch, Nano and Shuffle.

The iPod Classic originally launched in 2001, over the years it went through several hardware iterations and design tweaks. The Classic featured up to 160GB of storage space, now the highest capacity iPod you can buy is the 64GB iPod Touch.

While it is somewhat sad to see the iPod Classic disappear for good, it's not a surprising move. Dedicated music players are outdated these days as most people use smartphones in conjunction with streaming services like Spotify.

A new generation of iPods is expected to be announced in October, alongside new iPads and Macbooks.

KitGuru Says: The launch and popularity of the iPod Classic helped change the music industry all of those years ago. I used to own an iPod Classic myself and it served me well for many years. Did any of you guys ever own an iPod?

  1. what the hell, i was going to buy this in a few days/ weeks. just because of the size capacity, it’s the only product i will ever buy from apple

  2. Just because its no longer in production or mentioned on the Apple website does not mean you can’t acquire one. A single Google search will allow you to order one from an external provider, it will most likely be at a better price and is the exact product you were planning to get.

  3. i know, i just meant that even if people would want to buy it in the future, they won’t be able to as it will fade away from all stores after stocks finish

  4. That is very true, its kind of sad to see such an old Apple product go. But they were getting a tad out of date, I would personally choose the newer technology and stream rather than worrying about music transfers ect.. but thats just me 🙂 I know you like that product so I hope you enjoy it when you order it in the near future.

  5. Only Apple product I ever purchased, the storage capacity is amazing!

  6. The only apple product I’ve ever bought or ever will, it’s the only time that they’ve got it 100% right with a product, now we’ll have the new ipod classic, with smaller harddrive, less features & double the price of the old one, just like the iphone, except I won’t be a sheep & stand in line to buy one.
