Ubisoft twitter complains about Mario Kart 8 Mercedes promo

Nintendo made an interesting decision lately, to add Mercedes Benz cars to its Mario Kart 8 racer via a free DLC pack, presumably though some sort of joint promotion. Clearly someone at Ubisoft thought this was dumb, as the official twitter account of the publisher informed the world so, before the message was deleted and an apology sent out.

The upcoming DLC pack, set for release on the 27th August, will add the Mercedes-Benz GLA, the 1950s 300 SL Roadster and the 1930s Silver Arrow. As the original Ubisoft tweet suggested, they do seem to kill some of “the magic,” that's present in Mario Kart games.

“Not sure I like the Mercedes-Benz cars in Mario kart 8. Kinda breaks the magic. Be careful Nintendo.” read the message that was quickly deleted. Ubisoft later tweeted out, “Sorry about that. The opinion expressed does not in any way represent those of Ubisoft. It's been deleted.”

Perhaps a little bit of an overreaction, even if the account isn't there for Ubisoft employees to air personal opinions. It's not clear whether it was removed to prevent a fallout with Nintendo, or if it was thought likely to cause problems with their crossover fanbases.

  3. What are you talking about. Nintendo console owners are usually parents that bought it for their kids and sure as hell they have the money to buy an actual mercedes. I’ve seen plenty of rich families that only own a Wii

  4. Yeah, parents with household incomes of 150k+ a year are so much less likely to buy a benz than your buddy living in a studio apartment who owns a PS4.

  5. And those parents will most likely never see this DLC let alone play on the console, making your point utterly redundant.
    Whereas the PS4 gamer actually paid for it himself and has more chance of actually earning a salary that could get himself such a car, whereas Ninty gamers tend to be baristas on the best of days.

  6. Parents won’t play on the Wii U so won’t see the DLC, so there will be no passive advertising to the parents.

  8. Not only do you apparently not understand what “redundant” means, but you also are either very ignorant or a really bad troll. The poorest people I know are the ones with a PS4 or Xbone. The price difference between the Wii U and the PS4/Xbone is not enough of a reason on its own to make it the console of choice for poor people. The horrid jackasses with little money and even less money management skills are the most likely to buy a PS4/Xbone, or be bought one. Play online on PSN or XBL in public lobbies of pretty much any non-stategy or RPG game and 99% of everyone is either under 14 and cussing like a gradeschooler, or over 14 and cussing like a toddler at a bunch of kids under 14. You could argue this is the same for all consoles, but then you would be arguing your own point…

    Also, when did being able to afford a $400 device VS a $300 device become the deciding factor on whether you will ever be able to afford a Benz? Anyone aspiring to buy a Benz doesnt deserve enough money to buy one, anyways..

  9. Here’s some friendly advice. Don’t call someone ignorant and/or a troll, and then try to refute a point using anecdotal evidence.

    Do you have any sort of proof that it’s the “horrid jackasses with little money and even less money management skill” that will buy the more expensive consoles? No, no you don’t. Basic probability is that the PS4 & XB1 cater for a more affluent market because a) they are more expensive and b) they have a much larger market share.

    Look at the market Nintendo caters for. It is simply rehashing the same game year after year for the last two decades. Anyone who can’t see through that isn’t going to be the sharpest person, and unlikely to be management material. The person who throws on CoD for an hour after work however is much more likely to be a regular bloke – look at product placement in House of Cards for example.

  12. The fact they are the smallest market who buy into childish remakes of games that are 20 years old. Nothing about that screams management material or even vaguely successful if they indulge in nostalgia so badly.

  14. I own and play a Wii U and drive a supercharged Range Rover Sport. This is one of my daily drivers and I have a “toy” car that I only drive when it’s nice(due to the power level. It gets squirly on dry pavement much less anything wet). Not tooting my horn here but just pointing out the flaw in your statement.

  15. Nevermind all the baby boomers that are so nostalgic that they will spend a few hundred grand on a ’69 Chevelle, driving the cost of every classic car up because every dbag owner saw one in better shape go for half a mil on a Barrett Jackson auction.
