iOS 8 nears 50% adoption despite some performance glitches

Apple has revealed that nearly 50 per cent of all iOS devices have upgraded to the latest version, iOS 8, which launched just last week, surpassing Android KitKat's adoption rate in a mere six days. The new statistics were quietly revealed on Apple's App Store distribution site.

The exact percentage of iPhones and iPads already running iOS 8 is 46 per cent while 49 per cent of users are still using iOS 7 – A further five per cent of users are still running iOS 6 or lower. In contrast, around a quarter of Android devices had updated to 4.4 Kit Kat earlier this month.

This time last year, only around 43 per cent of users had updated to iOS 7, the slower adoption rate could be partially down to users not knowing if they like the all new re-design of the OS.

Despite the swift adoption rate, iOS 8 isn't without its problems. Some users are unable to clear enough space to install the update in the first place as it requires 4.7GB free space on iPhones and 6GB free on iPads. Additionally, some users have reported that the update has caused their device's WiFi connection to slow down dramatically. I can confirm that my own iPhone 5s has had some trouble maintaining a solid Internet connection since installing the update.

KitGuru Says: iOS 8 isn't really a huge upgrade over iOS 7 so there's no rush to update your device just yet. Give Apple some time to iron out these first week issues and then think about upgrading.
