If you picked up a cheap 12GB PS3 just to play Grand Theft Auto V last September then you may find yourself unable to play online soon as Rockstar has warned that GTA Online updates will soon take up all of the space available on the console- forcing users to buy a bigger hard drive for the aging system if they want to keep playing online.
Grand Theft Auto V's install size has slowly grown since its launch and according to Rockstar, the GTA Online flight school update will be the last to fit on to 12GB PS3 systems- which isn't surprising given the amount of updates the game's multiplayer component has received.
A statement on Rockstar's website says: “As the world of Grand Theft Auto Online continues to expand and evolve through ongoing updates, storage limitations of the PlayStation 3 12GB hardware will require owners to purchase additional storage to accommodate GTAV Title Updates after 1.16 (released on 8/19/14). All updates and content must remain installed on the system in order to maintain compatibility for all players within GTA Online.”
Those of you who don't play the game online will still be able to access the single player as long as you decline updates. Development for GTA Online won't be stopping any time soon, especially since the game is set to debut on the PC, Xbox One and PS4 later this year.

KitGuru Says: A 12GB Playstation 3 was a stupid idea right from the start, although it's not quite as bad as Microsoft's 4GB Xbox 360. I imagine Rockstar will eventually end support for the last gen versions of the game anyway once it has launched on the PC, Xbox One and PS4. Although there are some rumors floating around suggesting that the revamped version of the game may have been delayed until 2015. Did any of you guys buy a 12GB PS3 on the cheap to play Grand Theft Auto V last year?
PC master race can handle all sizes of games with no worries just have to put a Hard drive in and ready to go .
I don’t wave the flag for either console or PC, but if you’ve got half a working brain, putting a HDD in a PS system isn’t exactly difficult.
I totally wave the flag for PCs, but even though PC HDD installation is a max difficulty of -1 (put in two screws + two cables), you’re totally right that console installation ain’t hard. But people *feel* like it’s hard, which makes all the difference. Of course, there’s also that PC gamers generally feel comfortable tinkering while consolers mostly don’t.
You’re right it’s not hard but how many can you fit? One , how many can you have in your PC ? As many as you can handle.
Lol people really make it sound like a religion between PC gamers and consoles. Why fight? Isn’t competitions good for everyone? Consoles are the ones which bring down the prices of PC products. Ridiculous…
Wait, what? There are definitely arguments for plus points in competition, but in what way to consoles bring down the price of PC products? The console games market with its artificially inflated prices has been needlessly pushing up the prices of PC games for years. New PC games cost £35-40 now, and that’s crazy.
I bought a 12GB PS3, but only because I had a spare 240GB SATA kicking around and knew the caddies cost about £10- It worked out so much cheaper!

Well no, there is causality in there somewhere. I’m genuinely interested how you see them as pushing prices down, as it’s well recognised and usually uncontroversial that the inflation of console game prices has driven up pc prices.
Have you ever heard of Humble Bundle? And there are cheap PC games on Steams too. You just have to look deeper to look for cheap PC games. Sure they are not new released games but it beat nothing….
Haha yeah, I’m very familiar with Steam… But that’s got nothing to do with the consoles. Release day games on Steam and elsewhere are very expensive, to compare with their console counterparts, but Steam and the PC economy is much freer than the consoles which means that after the main release period the prices depreciate very quickly on PC. That’s precisely because they are separated from the console prices at this point.
would be nice if sony made it easier to throw on an additional drive to the ps3. am glad i have a 350gb ps3. for now.
