Apple is now the fifth largest PC maker in the world

Apparently Apple is now the fifth largest PC maker in the world according to a new report. The company managed to beat out Asus for a global top five spot, the International Data Corporation's latest quarterly PC shipment report states.

The IDC's study also shows that the worldwide PC market contracted slightly in the second half of 2014. While the global PC market has declined this year, it only did so by 1.7 per cent, which is a big improvement on the IDC's 4.1 per cent prediction. Additionally, worldwide PC shipments fell by 7.6 per cent, which is a little better than the 10 per cent originally predicted.

The top five global PC makers, Lenovo, HP, Dell, Acer and Apple, all saw solid year on year growth according to the IDC. Each company managed to increase shipments by 5 to 12 per cent during the third quarter of 2013. However, rival PC makers saw their shipments drop by almost 18 per cent during the same quarter.

This sharp drop was apparently caused by “weaker than normal” back to school sales, the report also notes that while emerging regions had a disappointing effect on sales, the higher demand in Asian regions pushed shipments up slightly.

  1. Does this mean complete off-the-shelf PC solutions? If it does I’m surprised the article doesn’t at least point out that the real figures are skewed by the fact that a lot of people build their own from components.

  2. Yes, those rankings are based on number of PCs shipped, not components.

  3. I wonder what percentage of us still build our own.

That’s really a figure of laptop sales. If you buy a HP or Dell off the shelf of Best Buy or something you’re probably my grandparents.
