Nvidia driver update adds Dynamic Super Resolution support

Many of our readers have been quick to point out to us that Nvidia's latest driver update has added support for Dynamic Super Resolution, making downsampling easier for everyone. The new graphical feature was introduced with the launch of the GTX 980 and 970 GPUs but has since expanded to the GTX 400, 500, 600 and 700 series of cards.

You can activate DSR through GeForce Experience, it works by rendering images at a higher resolution and then downsampling them to fit your own display, resulting in a sharper image at your native resolution. Nvidia is currently claiming that it can deliver 4K quality graphics on a 1080p display, while that might be a little bit of a stretch, DSR will definitely help provide 1080p gamers with a nicer image, particularly if they have the graphics horsepower so its worth playing around with.

When rendering graphics at 4K, there is little need for anti-aliasing due to the amount of pixels involved. Usually, setting up downsampling can require a fair amount of effort but Nvidia's DSR tool should make it easier for those who want to give it a shot.

To enable DSR, you'll need to install the latest ‘Game Ready' 344.47 WHQL driver, which was released last night. Once installed, you can enable DSR by clicking on the wrench icon in the GeForce Experience window, there are extra options for scaling and softening the image.

When downsampling, some games may not re-adjust the HUD or UI properly so be on the lookout for that.

KitGuru Says: Downsampling can be a useful tool, particularly if you spent all your money on a high end GPU but don't have a high resolution monitor to do it justice. Plenty of you have already shown off your DSR gaming results, keep sharing your experiences with us and let us know if you run in to any issues with certain games.

  1. I just downloaded 344.48. I cannot find the options you are referring to. I have an EVGA GTX 770.Which tab of the Experience window would it be on?

  2. Inside Nvidia Experience select a game, hit custom setting and change the resolution in there. 🙂

  3. Go to the nVidia Control Panel and you can enable DSR through 3D Application Settings.

  4. Thanks, guys!

    will my frame rate decrease?

  6. This has been an option for a while now, and very easy to do. I’m not seeing what the big deal is.

  7. Yes, if your resolution goes up, you can expect your frame rate to decrease.

  8. No, this driver update adds this feature to older GPUS…

  9. Its been an option for older GPUs. All they are doing is downsampling.
