Staples investigating potential credit card security breach

US office supplies company Staples has announced that it is currently cooperating with police to help it investigate a potential security breach which could have made payment card details of its customers vulnerable.

The investigation was announced shortly after KrebsOnSecurity broke the news that banks were looking into a link between Staples stores in the North East of the US and credit card fraud. The fraudulent charges were said to have been recorded at non-Staples outlets like supermarkets and other large retailers.

As it stands, it's thought likely that Staples was hit with malware that stole details about the cards being used and then allowed nefarious individuals to clone those cards.

The only statement coming from the retailer right now, is that it is undergoing an investigation and that it “takes the protection of customer information very seriously.”

As Reuters reports, this is just the latest in a string of payment processing security problems that US retailers have been suffering from. Dairy Queen, Kmart, Home Depot and Michaels Stores Inc. have also been targeted in recent months, with many customer card details being stolen and re-used by criminals.
