A media report has revealed recommended prices of Nvidia Corp’s forthcoming GeForce GTX 970 and GeForce GTX 980 graphics cards. As expected, the large size of the code-named GM204 graphics processing unit that powers both products does not allow to make them affordable.
The GeForce GTX 980 graphics board with 4GB of GDDR5 memory will carry recommended price tag of $599, which positions it between the GeForce GTX 780 and the GeForce GTX 780 Ti, reports 3DCenter.org. It is expected that performance of the novelty will be higher compared to the former and lower compared to the latter, given its configuration. It is expected that the GTX 980 features 2048 stream processors (SPs), 128 texture units (TUs), 64 raster operations pipelines (ROPs), 2MB L2 cache, and 256-bit memory interface.
The GeForce GTX 970 is expected to cost $399 in the U.S., which may mean that its performance will be similar to that of the GeForce GTX 770. Actual configuration of the GeForce GTX 970 GPU is unknown, but it is expected that graphics cards on its base will carry 4GB of GDDR5 memory.
Recommended prices of the forthcoming graphics boards for Europe and the U.K. are unknown.
Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

There were estimates that said they would be lower? That makes no sense. New tech isn’t less expensive. Part of the Nvidia price is the research put into the newer cards.
The reason people were saying that the price would be lower was because the chips cost less to produce than the previous generation’s. Regardless, they have to sell them at the price points of the speed they produce. It’s faster than the 780, why wouldn’t it cost more? Why would anyone buy a 780 if they could get a faster 980 card cheaper? The 980’s cost to manufacture may be a lot cheaper than the 780, but how much something costs to make doesn’t always translate into lower pricing. Especially on release day.
I figured that. I never heard a rumor from a legitimate source about the price. Just wondering where everyone else heard it.
Also, why do they keep complaining that the 980 is not outperforming the 780 ti? They are different classes of cards.
I think if it didn’t outperform the 580ti, maybe even the 680ti, then people would have something to complain about. The only card it HAS to be faster than is the 780. A 980ti will have to be faster than the 780ti. The 970 will have to be faster than the 770. I bet those same people would be complaining about how the 970 isn’t faster than the 780.
We also don’t know all of the capabilities of the 980 either. It may have some new tricks. Maybe it’s better optimized for AA. Maybe it’s got some weird hair physics. Who knows. It may not be “faster”, but running games isn’t all about speed, it could make things prettier at the same speed. So, you’re not just paying more for FPS, and GHz. That’s something people often forget when speculating on hardware specs and price.
Exactly. Yet I keep seeing the same statement from the site on every article about the 980. It’s like fishing for a reason to complain. I’m excited for the line.
I’m excited too. My PC was recently killed by lightning damage. Great timing. I was running a GTX 280 and a core 2 E8400 with 8GB RAM. I have a $1250 replacement value on it through insurance. Already spent $750 on an i7 4790k, 16gb RAM, 256GB SSD, a new Lian-Li case, and a 650W Gold EVGA PS. I have $500 left in my budget for a 980 when they come out. If it costs $600, I don’t really care. It’s still going to be a kick ass system. 🙂
So why buy a 970 if it performs pretty much like a 770
Yeah, that’s a bit strange. I don’t think that is the case, cos I remember seeing a benchmark showing the 970 to outperform a 780, I could be wrong. However, even if it’s true, I’ve read that the lower power usage in the gtx 970 might make it very good for overclocks.
Most sites are currently reporting the 970 will start at $300, and the 980 at $500. Where is kitguru getting the $100 discrepancy from? $500 is only $50 over the previous rumors, JFYI.
It’s good for people that don’t have a 770 (like myself) I have a 670 and I’m looking to replace my card for a 970 or possibly a 980 if I have the money by then.
But that’s my point. The 970 should perform better than a 770 for the 770s original price. Just because its new doesn’t justify 100% why one should get that over 770. It better be faster than a 770 if they have the balls to charge $100 or more for it over a 770.
Well, I still have my ’05 PC but ehh,at winter I wanna make it up to date without doubt and it will be like : H-E ( i7 5820k ) 16 gigs DDR4 2800Mhz , Asus V Extreme , 1 x 980 , 2 x SSDs 240 gigs , 2TB storage , 1200w power supply and all of this on a darn skyscraper called Corsair 900D. It will keep me up like 7 ~ years?
Just like Apple, Nvidia are squeezing every penny out of it’s customers. “This card is just a little bit better, please spend another $400.”

If you have this much money to spare, cut back on the CPU, motherboard and RAM, get an i7 4790k with 16gb of 1600mhz with pretty much any motherboard and get two 980’s or 780ti’s in SLI. It will be MUCH cheaper and games will run twice as fast. When you focus on gaming you have to pump as much money on gpu’s as you can. First off, higher frequency ram makes absoloutely NO difference in desktop applications and games. The H-E i7 would be a total overkill, considering that a cpu like the first gen i7 960 can max out BF4 and run at like 70-80%. A cpu like the i7 4790k will last for even a decade without even trying. Also, make a custom liquid loop, but if you’re short on budget get a closed loop for your cpu. I personally recommend the H100i as long as you switch the fans, they’re kinda noisy (although im not an expert in closed loops, a quick google search will help you with your choice). A system like this will probably last for 7 years, although you may start experiencing problems with the SSD’s at some point, and the rest of the components are prone to failure in such a long time, but with good maintenance you should be good.
Why buy GTX 970 ?
1- GTX 970 performs better than GTX 770
2- Consume less power, and requires cheaper PSU than GTX 770
3- Maybe have more features like full hardware DX12 or HEVC decoder & encoder. However this is not confirmed yet.
4- Not everyone have GTX 770. Some people are upgrading from older GPU like GTX 670 or 660, and you will see bigger improvement with these older GPU
GTX 980 is said to have only 165w TDP. THats alone is huge leap over Kepler and AMD in efficiency.
AMD release noting, and you say noting against them
Nvidia release a new and more efficient GPU, and you attack them.
I’m sure releasing something new is better than noting, but yet you attack nvidia.
Nvidia is not forcing you to buy these new GPU, and not everyone who is upgrading own GTX 780. If you already have GTX 780 then just keep it. If you own something like GTX 680 then upgrading to GTX 980 should much more than “little bit better”.
GM204 is mid range chip – but right now they’re able to charge premium prices for them, to be fair because they’re stuck on 28nm for this release (FU Apple and ya fancy A8 chips hogging all the manufacturing capacity) it’s a bigger chip and will cost more, but mid range next gen performance with premium model numbers and prices attached the Nvidia cash cow loves a good milking – I’ll wait for 20nm and GM2#0 FU very much NVidia.
For a person like me who still is running 2 x 285s in SLI, a 980 is a welcome release. The price seems a bit steep of course but going from such an ancient SLI setup to a single card and saving on power consumption and head production is a win for me. I don’t need to buy a new video card every generation as some people tend to do it seems. nvidia/AMD are not asking EVERYONE to buy a card it’s up to you to decide if the value proposition is there or not. For me this is close to perfect (perfect would be free :P) as I am coming from such old but still working hardware. I have been gaming perfectly fine at 2560x 1600 and I would not have even bothered upgrading had I not gotten the message when trying to play Assetto Corsa that my card doesn’t even support DX 10.1 🙁

Thanks man,well I choose 5820k cause it has 6 cores and yeah I do graphics shit in Maya 3D and so on , so yeah…that’s why I put it there with all config.

Just wait for 980ti in nov-dec period. 🙂 dont just jump on 970 or 980. it is said that versions with 8GB will also be available.
Alright, so with your config you’ll probably last for more than a decade for graphic design, but games will start to be a problem in a relatively short amount of time compared to your overall expected lifetime for the pc (you’ll most likely struggle with framerates in about 3-5 years). But hey, you can always get a second 980 (which will probably be dirt cheap at that time) and you’ll be all set. Unless of course you don’t care about gaming, in which case its more than ok for your needs.
Also, keep in mind that Google is developing quantum processors. If money is a problem for you (which I doubt, given the amount you’re going to spend :p) you might want to start saving up. Those things are the wet dream of every graphic designer, and may be already on the way in 4-5 years.
