Microsoft has officially announced its next version of Windows, it's called Windows 10 and has been “built from the ground up for a mobile first, cloud world”, according to Terry Myerson, Windows Chief.
The new operating system will “unlock new experiences to allow customers to work, play and connect”, it will also run on the “broadest types of devices ever” as a one application platform for one product family, unifying Windows on mobile, tablets and the desktop.
The focus of Microsoft's announcement then shifted to Enterprise users, stating that Windows 10 will be “familiar for these companies”, and that business users will be compatible with all traditional management systems used today. The company also touted that “Windows 10 is going to be our greatest enterprise platform, ever.”
The start menu is officially back for desktop users, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore said that the company is “looking to find the balance, so that all Windows 7 users get a familiar experience on the devices they already have,” the new start menu is exactly the same as in the leaks, with traditional application icons on one half and metro style pins on the other, combining both Windows 7 and Windows 8 styles. The Metro portion of the start menu is also customizable.
The search bar on the start menu has seen some improvements and will even bring up web results. Metro style apps can now be windowed and will work better with a mouse and keyboard. Users will be able to access both classic and universal apps. Belfiore said that “we don't want the duality, we want users on PCs with mice and keyboards to have their familiar UI,”
Windows 10 will also feature better multitasking capabilities, allowing users to open up virtual desktop windows and switch between them, much like the ‘expose' feature on Mac OS X.
The Windows Charm bar is still around and hasn't been removed, like earlier rumors suggested, although Belfiore admits that he expects aspects of the charms bar to change before the final release.
For those of you that own a two-in-one laptop/tablet, Windows 10 will contain a feature called ‘Continuum', which will allow you to switch between the traditional mouse and keyboard input method and a newly improved touch UI.
Microsoft is allowing enthusiasts to try out the Technical Preview of Windows 10, starting from tomorrow. This will be a part of the ‘Windows Insider Program', the consumer version will be talked about a bit more at Microsoft's build conference next April, the company is currently aiming for a mid 2015 final release.
There is currently no announcements to be made regarding pricing or upgrade deals.

We don’t want a joint platform! Look at the mess of windows 8. I’ve got 8.1 and I have to google how to do thing but it just comes up with tutorials for their tablets on their website! Frustrating

I have it, i don’t particularly have a problem with metro, it’s just trying to find stuff like theming settings and trying to get backup to work the way I want
Why can’t they just put the start menu back for those that want it? Why continue to piss about only going half the way? Most people still on Windows 7, by choice, are there because they want the start menu. If you want to make it familiar to them, give them the fucking start menu.
I mean, really, Microsoft? It’s not rocket science. Give users what they want.
Hope they dont stop support for windows 9 early because of this “windows 10”. Im really looking forward to windows 9……still enjoying windows 7 though ☺.

I like it. I wish it weren’t a joint platform, but that’s done. Overall, it seems like it’s going to be a nice OS – clean and quick, and versatile.
Not sure if serious – if yes, then you missed the point. There is no Windows 9, they’re skipping straight to Windows 10. All of the press releases called what is now going to be Windows 10 Windows 9.
It basically is there. Much more than Windows 8, anyway. And if you look at the video, there’s a persistent desktop, and basically, the metro screen no longer really exists (kind of). There’s always a taskbar, and the metro screen isn’t just a different thing

Looks bad at first, but look harder and you’ll see it’s basically just a new window on top of the desktop.
I don’t *know* it’ll be good, but it looks much closer to something decent than 8/8.1 has ever looked.

Backup appears to be one of the significantly improved components, both in terms of customisation, as well as capability and distribution.
Joint platforms will be how everything eventually goes. Initially, iOS was supposed to be a “mobile version of OS X”, and is now so fragmented that reintegrating the two is a mighty feat for Apple, but they’re keen at work at unifying the platform. Android will eventually merge with ChromeOS, likely as of Android 5 or 6. Even Ubuntu is attempting to be a fully unified platform, as Ubuntu 14.10 will be Ubuntu Phone-ready. They’re probably going to be the first to get there, though, so we’ll see how that goes.

Windows 8 Continuum essentially is like the menu from Windows 8 (like Metro). You will be able to configure it so as to have your windows key trigger Continuum or the start menu. When in tablet mode, this is probably even more critical to be able to operate as you see fit.

But that’s archaic. If you have a windows phone and Pc, I for one cant wait to have apps sync across the devices whilst giving me the optimal experience depending on user input. Want to check weather and emails? Start button. That saves me time so great.
Giving people the choice is what is missing here though, Not everyone wants to have everything linked.
Well you’d be in the minority then. I’m rational about these things – I didn’t like 8/8.1 because they weren’t as good at doing what I need to do with them. I don’t really care that much what it looks like, only that it’s functional. 10 looks to be far more functional than 8, and possibly even more than 7 (for me), and if so, I’ll be satisfied.
what is it your trying to with it 8/8.1 they run all the same programs as win7 the only difference was the metro menu which was alot mor functional than the start menu ever was once you set it up rather than cloging the desktop with hundreds of shortcut icons or pilling them onto the taskbar you could have all your most used programs and apps in one easily accessible place rather than using 20 different menus and sub menus to get to one program.
