Tim Cook: Apple Watch will need to be charged daily

Apple continues to be extremely tight-lipped about its upcoming Watch timepiece, even though the product has been formally introduced and is about three months away from mass availability. Fortunately, the company lets at least some details out.

One of the key concerns about wearable electronics in general is battery life. Since devices have to be light, small and comfortable to wear, huge batteries are not an option. At the same time, developers cannot cut-down functionality to save energy because without useful features it will not make any sense to use wearable gadgets. Modern smart-watches need to be charged every one or two days. Apparently, Apple’s Watch will be no exception, its battery life will be around a day.

“We think people are going to use it so much you will end up charging it daily,” said Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple, during a question and answer session with the Wall Street Journal.

While Apple has not revealed technical details and complete information about functionality of Apple Watch, we do know that the device can send and receive messages and mail, accept/deny calls, use maps, run special apps and do many other things. Obviously, heavy usage will drain battery.

While one-day battery life may not be a bad thing, this is a drawback for those, who travel a lot; charging many gadgets while travelling is not always comfortable. While running out of charge on a PC or a tablet while not at home is unpleasant, discharged smartphone and watch could be catastrophic.

KitGuru Says: Looks like owners of Apple Watch who plan to travel and use them a lot will need to either own mechanical watches, or make sure that their smartphones have enough battery life left at all times.
