Sales of Microsoft Xbox One hit nearly 10 million units

Microsoft Corp. late on Wednesday said that the life-to-date (LTD) shipments of its Xbox One video game console are about to surpass 10 million units. As expected, sales of XB1 are significantly behind those of Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4, which is shipments have set multiple records for Sony.

“As we head into the busy holiday season Xbox One led generation 8 console sales in the U.S. for the past two weeks,” said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of devices and studios at Microsoft Corp. “Shortly, we will have sold in to retailers more than 10 million Xbox One consoles.”

According to Microsoft, the company has shipped almost 10 million Xbox One units to retailers, which means that actual installed based of the platform is lower than that. Around two weeks ago Sony Corp. said that it had sold in (to retailers) 13.5 million PlayStation 4 units, which is 35 per cent higher compared to LTD shipments of Microsoft’s Xbox One.

Keeping in mind that Microsoft Xbox One experienced rather slow start last year because of the high price, the fact that the game consoles were launched in many Asian and European countries only recently and some other factors, rather weak sales of the platform compared to the main rival are not really surprising.

Microsoft believes that going forward sales of Xbox One will get higher thanks to improvements that it has made to the console and new games from renowned developers.

KitGuru Says: It is unknown when and if Microsoft Xbox One manages to catch up with Sony PlayStation 4 in terms of sales, but considering that the software giant is not afraid of temporary price-cuts, change of bundle and other things, it is clear that the Xbox business unit is still very important for the company. But will everything that Microsoft is doing be enough to make Xbox One a success? For now, this is a question without an answer.

  1. If I am not wrong Sony’s numbers are not talking about retailers, but customers.

  2. No, you’re wrong. Its retailers. Sony has no way of knowing that information unless they went to every retailer and got their individual sales numbers. No company would give that out, and if they did it wouldn’t be free. Sony is in enough financial trouble as it is.
