AMD Radeon R9 290X 8GB available for pre-order, but prices are high

Overclockers UK has started to sell and take pre-orders on AMD Radeon R9 290X graphics cards with 8GB of GDDR5 memory. The store offers various graphics cards from multiple suppliers. Unfortunately, prices of such graphics boards are considerably higher than expected just several days ago.

AMD Radeon R9 290X 8GB graphics cards are based on fully-fledged Hawaii-XT (2816 stream processors, 176 texture units, 64 raster operations pipelines, 512-bit memory bus and 1GHz default clock-rate) graphics processing units and come with slightly increased GPU (up to 1040MHz) and memory (up to 5.50GHz) frequencies.

At present Overclockers UK offers four Radeon R9 290X graphics cards with 8GB of memory:

  • Sapphire Radeon R9 290X Vapor-X OC 8192MB GDDR5 – £379.99;
  • Sapphire Radeon R9 290X 8192MB GDDR5 – £359.99;
  • Powercolor Radeon R9 290X PCS+ OC 8192MB GDDR5 – £379.99;
  • MSI Radeon R9 290X Gaming Edition 8192MB GDDR5 – £379.99;

The prices of 8GB versions of AMD’s Radeon R9 290X graphics cards seem to be rather high, keeping in mind that OcUK offers regular versions of the Radeon R9 290X graphics boards with 4GB of GDDR5 memory for £221.99£259.99.

Since AMD Radeon R9 290X 8GB graphics cards seem to be over-priced today, it is unclear how AMD plans to recapture market share from Nvidia using such boards. Perhaps, the launch of such solutions is meant to keep average selling prices of AMD Radeon R9 graphics cards on relatively high levels after the company and its partners had to start offering discounts on the Radeon R9 products in October. Still, it is unclear why AMD wants to launch a product that is not going to become really popular.

AMD did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Perhaps, AMD intentionally set high recommended prices on the Radeon R9 290X 8GB graphics cards in order to see the pricing of Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 970/980 8GB solutions and then adjust its price-tags to stay competitive. In this case, it makes sense waiting before buying.

  1. At those prices I wouldn’t buy them. Time will tell. I’ll wait till the price drops.

  2. if someone buy them and that as in response to ” someone” change one thing on the card..
    and ” you” as a customer rush to buy a new card each time that happen…
    you can have that, since you seems to afford it… ( but I would not consider that..smart.! )

    The Only reason to buy this card / and others with special features is…. that you Need a new card…
    and this and all the other cards is available for you (us) to chose from…
    And upon that, you have the need.´as in you got factors to consider, such as.. your got programs that support this, you play on more then 1 monitor, and so forth, then…possible, its necessary.
    Otherwise if you know, what you are doing… its a spoil and a waste of money to buy a new, more expensive card… even if it have 8GB of memory…
    – but, who cares and why bother, since people has done stupid things, since the beginning of time…
    and the will continue to do so, since that is the way life is… ( since it’s cool…)
    But I think this…. its of good value for all of us, as in, When more and more Products, get out on the market, the prices drops, and better and better cards reach us.. – sooner or later…
    and that, for a price, that is reasonable.

    – for me ? I wait until nVidia show what they have… before I buy a new one… since their Version is more economic and draw less power = lower heat, = lower noise… and for me, thats more important, then a lot of the other features… but, hey we are all different, so,if you rush out and buy one, its all up to you… 😉

    Have fun, game on…
    and a good morning to all of you..!

  3. Ridiculous price! AMD are suffering at the moment and throwing a price like this out is not going to help. I can see them going bust to be honest. The card is beaten by gtx 970 on price, performance, power consumption,heat production and they are quieter. I can see gtx 970 8gb been far cheaper

  5. CervixCreampier

    Probably the only GPU which can run SoM stutter free with the ultra res pack, among the Titan, Titan Black, Titan Z, GTX780 6GB and R9 280X/7970 6GB.

    Really a shame these high memory cards disappeared. As if someone saw the future and took it knowing about those shit console ports damn.
