A few Super Smash Bros 3DS players have been hit with massive 136 year bans from playing the game online. The lengthy penalties seem to have been dished out due to a bug in Nintendo's automated anti-griefer system, which is designed to punish anyone aggressively targeting a specific player during group matches.
Smash Bros should typically ban people for 15 minute periods but those affected by this bug have been given messages informing them that they can't play online for 71,582,030 minutes- or 136 years.
One Reddit user has attempted to figure out exactly why the ban has reached that ridiculous number. The current theory involves it being a simple error in the code used to determine ban length.
What's worse for these affected players is that Nintendo has yet to address the issue or even acknowledge it publicly. There's currently no clear way to avoid this happening to players aside from avoiding the game's online mode entirely until this bug is gone. That said, it's possible that one on one battles should be fine.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully Nintendo will fix this bug rather fast as 136 years of ban time seems pretty excessive. Automated systems are never perfect and these things tend to happen from time to time, hopefully those affected will get their bans lifted and can continue to play the game fairly soon. What do you guys make of this? 136 years seems pretty crazy.
Automated bans for repeatedly killing the same player? Whatever happened to good old “ban people for cheating”?
A ban is a ban. Learn to play the game respecting other players or live with the ban…..boohoo.
So… If Nintendo’s matchmaking system puts me with you, and I am colossally better than you, I deserve a ban? Thats retarded. They are punishing people for being good at the game. Its pathetic, childish whining, nothing more. Don’t like it? Don’t play online. Its unrated for a reason. Nintendo should be ashamed of itself.
Awww,did you get banned?
What a dumbass response. Wolfie you’re fucking retarded and the fact you can’t even see his point means you’re not worth debating with….please forgo reproduction.
are you a troll? The banning system works by banning players who win, those who take the time to learn how to play well get banned.
I don’t even own the game. I’m just against all forms of oppressive practice across all platforms and genres. You ban people for cheating or hacking. You don’t ban people who are better at the game than others. Simple logic, for your simple mind.
Here’s another example. We are both DPS in a raid. Your DPS is 100,000, and mine is 600,000. I get banned simply because I play better than you. Its pathetic, just like your attitude. This makes me not want to buy the game at all, and that sucks.
100% retard
Wow, that is one bad matchmaking system, matching you with a noob,
No, and wolfie actually has a point. you are only banned when you repeatedly kill the same player over and over again, which is imo perfectly acceptable.
And what happens if just by sheer coincidence in a match the same person keeps stepping in front of your lof and ends up getting repeatedly killed, by you, through no fault of your own other than just playing the game?
This being said, While being better at the game than some shouldn’t be banable, being a bad winner and rubbing it in or taunting the person for not being as good as you is. I play tournaments for some games and my team often gets rekt. However we don’t mine and still enjoy the game and even become friends with who beat us to get better and learn from them. However people that start messing around with us and not playing properly make the game boring and not enjoyable. there is a middle ground here its not black and white.
There’s better ways of dealing with that than banning people. Better match-making code would be a start, and the ability to block other players would be another
you be dead then
Then do it on a reporting basis. If its bad enough, that person would get banned. Using an automated system that can’t tell what they have said, and goes purely on the basis that Player 1 is better than Player 2 is a terrible idea.
No. He has no point. Its an idiotic system that will do nothing but destroy the competitive portions of SSB.
Entirely agreed. Never said that it was a good idea, I just said that it wasn’t THAT stupid. Of course there are always better alternatives, but Nintendo probably wanted to take the easy way out. I dont know how the matchmaking in SBB works so Im pretty much talking about something I dont know, but i’m guessing that you get to choose who you attack? In which case its stupid of someone to always attack the same person cause he knows that person is a noob. The ability to block other players would be utterly stupid however as then everyone would just block people who have beaten them once and good players would never be able to find a decent fight xD Once again though having better match making code would fix the problem but honestly I havent seen a single good match making code in my entire life so yeah, I dont really know if devs are capable of it.

Since such a system is in place, I’m guessing you get to choose who you fight. In which case I dont think its that bad of an idea. Whats a lof though o.O
