You can now buy the PS4 and Xbox One in laptop form

Consoles aren't the most portable things in the world but Ed Zarick looks to be changing that by showing off and selling the PlayBook 4 and Xbook One- laptop versions of Sony and Microsoft's latest consoles. However, you'll need to have a wedge of disposable income in order to afford one as they both cost close to £1000/$1500.

Zarick is a self-taught engineer who was also responsible for previously creating a portable Xbox 360, the Xbook 360. Last month, he began selling the Xbook One, featuring a 22 Inch Vizio 1080p LED TV and the console itself packaged in a 3D printed and laser cut case.  Zarick has run through the process of turning a console in to a laptop on his own website, Edsjunk. The process for the Playbook 4 is presumably exactly the same, featuring a 22″ Vizio 1080p LED TV and a 3D printed and laser cut case for the console. As you can see in the image above too, these laptop versions can be a bit chunky, the PS4 as we are used to seeing it is actually fairly small. Both consoles come with a HDMI out so that they can still be plugged in to a TV as a console rather than just being used as a laptop. Apparently, demand for these is actually quite high, the Xbook One goes for $1500 plus $75 extra for shipping inside of the US, international shipping will cost extra. The Playbook 4 on the other hand goes for $1400 with shipping charged as extra. Buyers are required to pay a $750.00 non-refundable upfront deposit in order to be added to the waiting list.

KitGuru Says: The Xbook One and Playbook 4 actually seem pretty cool although as you would expect, they are expensive- the parts involved in building one don't come cheap and due to the time and effort he is putting in to it, Zarick absolutely deserves to be paid for the labour too. What do you guys think of these laptop/console hybrids? If you were rich, would you consider buying one? Or do you think its rather pointless?

  1. ‘Laptop’ looks like its gonna weigh a ton, and i bet battery is gonna be shit

  2. Neither of them will have a battery. They will both be required to plug into a wall outlet to play. He says that on his website.

Roughly 120w (xb1) and 150w (ps4) power consumption for both consoles when running games. Along with a 15w monitor, and extra fans, you’re looking at a 130-160w laptop. That alone would need 15000mAh batteries, and would probably only last for an hour or so.

  3. Even if you have to have it connected into a socket, it’s still pretty cool. Any custom console can be pretty cool, as long as it works cleanly, like these laptop hybrids for either system.

  4. Most useless shit ever created. 1000$/1500$? You can buy a laptop from it that’s atleast 293587236450 times better & more powerfull + you can run it with a battery + the graphics look better + smoother fps.

  5. At $1,400-$1,500 for a console ‘laptop'(which it honestly shouldn’t be called unless he’s also programmed it to act like a computer by playing things like LoL, DotA, WoW, and other popular games that a console can’t play) you’re better off just buying an actual laptop that’s built for gaming. At least you don’t have to keep those plugged into a wall, and they aren’t as heavy as a bag of bricks.

  6. Hey give the guy some credit. I think its actually useful for console
gamers who wants to go on a vacation and stuff, plus you wont be
hugging the TV if you share it with someone in a hotel room………
Just look at the bright side, playing console exclusive games on a
    Laptop = PRICELESS.

  7. Yeah i agree! Its just too expensive for what it is. Of course at $1500 i would rather buy a ROG laptop… Maybe for $600 but thats twice less rofl.

  8. I was never really a console guy, but this looks like a gimmick, its practical use is.. well, useless, if I needed to transfer a console to some other place, i would just buy the console (400$) and a monitor (Another 200-400, depends on where you live, the quality, etc.) and put them in a bag.

It’s not a laptop, though. It’s just an over-sized version of a handheld console. I’m pretty sure if you put this thing on your laptop, you’d likely crush your legs, and overheat them very quickly. It’s just a portable console, and as for console exclusive games, well, there really aren’t that many of those, and I’d have greater access to games on a PC. They tend to play games that are usually suited for both consoles, and if you’re spending $1,400-$1,500, you’d definitely be able to buy one with plenty of power to play high-end games. I mean, console fanatics are going to buy into this, simply because they’re fanatics, but PC gaming is just a lot better in my opinion. It can do more than consoles, and can play almost any game they can.

  10. The Saiyan Prince

Quite honestly, I’d be more impressed if someone made a disc drive that could read console games and could be connected to a computer through a USB port. Something like that, I would definitely buy.

  11. Like he asked if i were rich but thats not the case lol!!!, maybe but definitly would only use them on the go

  12. HALO COLLECTION OMG!

  13. Why the fanboyism? Were on the same team. I’m a pc gamer myself, but the idea of playing console exclusive games on a laptop/console hybrid is a good idea. And i wouldnt put it on my lap because……… who does that to a gaming laptop?!?!?!?!?!

  15. lol 400 for console plus tv which i got at walmart for 100 bucks. so that make 500 in design thats been easily designed im good. id rather macgyver my own and put a battery on it

  16. It’s not a hybrid. It’s not a laptop. It’s a portable system with a monitor built in. That’s it. You can’t use word on it. You can’t play PC exclusive games on it. You can’t design video games or websites on it… It’s a portable console, not a laptop. Stop calling it one.

  17. umm… it doesn’t work llike that you know

  18. Here we see a fledgeling potato attempting to ascend to the level of a PC. As you can see, it is not well enough developed, leading to dismal failure. Such is the life of the potato.

  19. The Saiyan Prince

It could. I understand that the firmware on the disc drive has to match the rest of the system. They make mini computers, and they could do it with a gaming console if they really wanted to do so. The technology exists. All it’d really be doing is using the laptop as a screen.

  20. I want Sony and Microsoft to actually make console laptops. Although gimmicky, they have their uses in theory. Would be cool to see. Considering more power is being packed in laptops nowadays. It’s plausible. Think of the PSOne with the little screen attachment.

  21. Here’s an idea: if you go on vacation – DONT BRING YOUR CONSOLE. lmfao

  22. Yah, no… Just because you can read a disc, doesn’t mean you can play the game. Look at it this way: The Processor in your Computer knows a Language – x86_64 – while the Disk is Speaking another – Generally a Variant of ARM. Could you go and just pick up a book in another language and read it, having never learned the language?

Flip side of the coin of course is Emulators, which act as a Dictionary of sorts, allowing you to translate from ARM to x86_64, so that the processor can understand it. Unfortunately this is Slow – Have you ever read a book using a dictionary to read every word?

  23. The Saiyan Prince

You’re not understanding what I’m saying, though. The ‘disc drive’ wouldn’t really be a ‘disc drive’ per say. It would be a miniature system that reads the disc itself, and then translates for the computer through a program that can be installed on the computer. It would then really just use the computer as a screen, and you’d play through the program.

  24. You just described a Hardware based emulator.

  25. The Saiyan Prince

    Yeah, pretty much.
