AMD may speed up Radeon R9 290X ‘Hawaii’ graphics card

Advanced Micro Devices plans to release yet another graphics card based on the code-named “Hawaii” graphics processing unit, a media report claims. The new adapter is projected to be faster than the Radeon R9 290X, which will allow AMD to better compete against Nvidia Corp.’s GeForce GTX 970.

Fudzilla reports that the updated Radeon R9 290X will be released early in 2015. The web-site does not reveal whether the new “Hawaii”-based graphics card will feature considerably higher clock-rates, or will activate previously deactivated execution units, such as stream processors and texture units.

While the name and price of the new graphics card are unknown, it is likely that the new graphics adapter will be sold at around $329/€320, the price-point of GeForce GTX 970. With higher performance, the new graphics solution will better compete against the rival.

While it is logical for AMD to offer a better graphics card to compete against the GeForce GTX 970, it should be noted that the novelty has to be released now in a bid to better position AMD for the holiday season.

It is expected that the faster Radeon R9 290X will co-exist on the market with AMD’s next-gen flagship Radeon R9 390X graphics card code-named Fiji XT.

AMD did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: It is completely unclear why AMD decided not to boost clock-cates of the Radeon R9 290X 8GB graphics card. This would increase attractiveness of the 8GB graphics cards and would justify their higher price.

  1. Considering the 200 series and how stuff carried over there, we may be looking at the new R9 380X.

  2. I think pricing like a 970 is still too much for the card compared to the 970 with it’s power consumtion and performance (in 1080p) in mind. But let’s wait for the 3xx series, I still need a new GPU and I am really exited about it.

  3. lets hope AMD’s smashes the 970 forcing Nivida to bring out a even better version then AMD releases an even better version, this cycle is the best =D

  4. that’s what every gamer (except the stupid fanboys) wants, AMD and Nvidia forcing each other to build better GPUs. Let’s see if I change to Nvidia or stay with AMD, it looks like Nvidia got the upper hand NOW

  5. Also if they make it cheaper than $100 the world will turn upside down!…

  7. it would have been better to compare it to the 980 .. the 970 is both an on-par performer and a more expensive card

  8. They can pump up clocks or activate deactivated units, but they’d need some unique features to beat the low TDP and noise of the 970 at the same price point

  9. Isn’t the 970 basically along the lines of the 780/780ti which were the main competitors of the 290x when it was released

  10. well that is basically agreeing with what I posted. the 290x is already competitive with the 970 .. improving it will only bring it into competition with the 980 (arguably, it is better than the 980 when you see it is still 90% as fast but also much cheaper).

  11. something tells me AMD will pull the same thing as NVIDIA. Meaning they will release cards on 28nm node but with smaller thermals and power with much increased efficiency. The 290x might as well become the new 380x, but expect lots of improvements when it comes to power and temperature.
