A hoverboard project has hit Kickstarter

Hoverboards finally exist and you can actually own one thanks to a new Kickstarter campaign offering up their current working model. It's pricey though, a pre-built model will set you back $10,000 while a ‘DIY kit' will only cost $299. The campaign currently has 53 days left to go and has managed to raise over $207,000 of its $250,000 goal from 871 backers.

The board itself looks a bit like the one found in Back to the Future 2, a very common comparison you'll see thrown around the Internet. There are videos available showing the board hovering in the air and supporting full body weight, although there is a downside, the propellers sound absolutely awful, the concept is awesome and the fact that its working is even better but I doubt many will want to put up with the noise for long. Hoverboard

Obviously, the hoverboard is still in the very early stages so some early flaws, such as the noise, are to be expected. In the years to come, these things will be ironed out, hopefully one day we will have hoverboards that operate much quieter.

Future Hoverboard

This is what Hendo hopes to achieve in the future, a board offering 1 inch of ride height, a sleeker form factor and full control over movement alongside some safety measurements should anything go wrong.

All of the pre-built Hendo hoverboards are gone now so if you had $10,000 lying around, you'll have to spend it on something else. However, there are plenty of DIY kits left if you want to try out the early technology. You can check out the Kickstarter page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: So it looks like Hoverboards are finally becoming a real thing. I've never been good on a skateboard but I would love to try one of these out. what do you guys think of this? How long do you think it will take for hoverboards to become mainstream?

  1. great hoverboard but that noise is annoying , keep it up

  2. The fact that it needs special surfaces kind of puts a damper on things.

  3. I don’t think this is the big thing we have all been waiting for, but it is a huge step in the right direction. If they take this technology and modify it (less noise, etc) they will have a winning product on their hands.

  4. “Hoverboards finally exist…”
No they do not. This is simple fan technology. The one in the Back to the Future 2&3 utilises antigravity technology.

  5. Hoverboard… Literally just a board that hovers. It doesn’t need some highly advanced technology that will make it right out of a movie.

  6. I could see this technology being used for elevators.

  7. For anyone that bought one it must be $10,000 worth of sigh. You can only ever ride this thing on a metal surface and in every video it’s as slow as hell. The inventor isn’t a scientist, he’s an architect. This thing is a gimmick. For those that are easily impressed it must be an amazing device.
