Asustek readies GeForce GTX 980 graphics card with hybrid cooling

Asustek Computer is working on what could eventually become one of the highest-performing GeForce GTX 980 graphics cards on the planet. The forthcoming Asus Poseidon GTX 980 will feature a hybrid cooling system and proprietary design of printed-circuit board to enable unprecedented overclocking potential.

The Asus ROG Poseidon GTX 980 features a cooling system that features a custom copper waterblock (that is in direct contact with the GPU), which allows plugging tubes (using standard G¼-inch threaded fittings) from custom liquid-cooling systems, as well as a massive aluminium radiator with ultra-thin fins with heat-pipes. According to Asustek, with water-cooling, ROG Poseidon GTX 980 achieves up to 27°C-lower running temperatures than reference designs. With air-cooling, ROG Poseidon GTX 980 is also significantly cooler than graphics cards, which use Nvidia’s reference cooling systems.

The unique graphics card from Asustek is based on custom printed-circuit board featuring 10-phase Digi+ voltage-regulation module (VRM) with solid-state black metallic capacitors, concrete-core chokes and hardened MOSFETs. Thanks to digital VRM, there is an ample room for experimental performance tuning – to levels unmatched by graphics cards based on Nvidia’s reference design. Thanks to that and advanced cooling solution, Asustek’s ROG Poseidon GTX 980 promises to be an excellent overclocker.

The manufacturer does not reveal exact GPU clock-rate of the upcoming graphics card, but claims that its maximum (boost clock) frequency will be 1279MHz. 4GB of GDDR5 memory will be clocked at 7010MHz.
