The 20th of October looks set to be one of the best days of the year for video game releases. Just a few days ago reviews for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 went live, with it receiving universal acclaim. Now, the embargo for Super Mario Bros. Wonder has been lifted – and it too has unsurprisingly become one of the highest rated games of the year.
Ahead of the game’s launch on the 20th of October, reviews for Super Mario Bros. Wonder have now gone live, with review aggregator Metacritic collating the scores to an average of 93/100 across 80 critic reviews – officially marking it as a Metacritic ‘Must Play’ and landing it as the 8th highest rated game of the year as well as the highest rated 2D Mario of all time (aside from Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 for the GBA)
Another review aggregator, OpenCritic, has scored Mario Bros. Wonder 92/100 based on 50 critic reviews – with 98% of them recommending the game.
For the uninitiated, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first 2D Mario platformer to release in years, and marks a departure from the NEW Super Mario Bros. series which ran from 2006 until 2019 – giving the series a new art style, a tighter feeling of control and overall more creative and imaginative design choices.
It will be interesting to see what fans think of the game when they get their hands on it in just a few days – and whether Wonder marks the start of a brand new direction for Nintendo and the Italian plumber.
