Valve begins reversing VAC bans for Radeon Anti-Lag+ users

Last week, Valve confirmed that AMD's Anti-Lag+ technology was being flagged by its anti-cheat system in Counter-Strike 2, resulting in a number of false bans. Now a week later, Valve is beginning to reverse the bans.

Valve and AMD both put out warnings to the Counter-Strike 2 playerbase last week as a number of Anti-Lag+ users began receiving VAC bans while playing the game. This is due to the way Anti-Lag+ functions. By making changes to .dll files, many online game anti-cheat systems will pick up on this an issue a ban for game file tampering. As a result, AMD issued a driver update that disabled the feature for all supported games while it works things out.

The way Anti-Lag+ functions should be perfectly fine for single-player titles but for online multiplayer games with anti-cheat systems, AMD may need to work more closely with developers to avoid situations like this or revamp the feature entirely to operate differently.

As of yesterday, Valve has begun reversing VAC bans against those who used Anti-Lag+. If you were caught up in the ban wave, you may not find yourself unbanned immediately but give it a few days and you should be able to play as normal once again.

KitGuru Says: This has been an unfortunate situation but order is being restored. Now we'll have to wait and see how AMD plans to handle Anti-Lag+ moving forward, particularly for online games.

KitGuru Games: Omni-movement culminates 30 years of FPS innovation

While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.
