MSI GS30 Shadow and GamingDock Preview

One of the major problems when buying a gaming laptop is that you are stuck forever with the graphics inside. Within 18 months they are very often struggling to keep up with the latest game engines. MSI is looking to resolve this problem with their upcoming MSI GS30 Shadow Super Portable laptop which can be paired up with a full sized desktop graphics card. Need more frame rate horsepower? – order a standard GPU online.

Thanks to the MSI GamingDock – a desktop sized graphics card can be installed inside and it simply connects to a slot on the laptop to deliver the ultimate gaming experience. On the move you simply disconnect the GamingDock from the laptop.

Unfortunately MSI are not allowing us to give you benchmark figures just yet, but we have a gallery of the MSI GS30 Shadow and Gaming Dock. Furthermore, Leo Waldock at Kitguru TV takes a look at the system, in action.

Please be aware, this is the only sample of the product in the United Kingdom and performance may change closer to launch time when new drivers and software are released.

MSI supplied the Gaming Dock with one of their custom GTX980 Gaming 4G graphics cards, which we reviewed back on launch day, over HERE. Discuss on our Facebook page, over HERE.

Is this a system you need to be shortlisting in 2015? We will have a full review as soon as MSI allow us.

    useless vídeo review :s

  2. Good idea, but that will cost a lot

  3. MSI if my favorite brand for graphics, motherboards and laptops… but I would prefer spending an extra $750 for a dominator to get a gtx 880m 4gb gddr5 and be able to run all the game (nearly on great graphics)

  4. Not a review.. but a preview. He’s under an NDA.

  5. Am I the only one who notices all the fuck-ups with this design?

  6. like what?

  7. Thanks for the extra information Zardon and MSI. I have been researching this since its announcement as I am a potential customer for this product. It suits my computing needs as Hardware/Software Engineer. There are however some design issues with the box unit. Most people seem to dislike the current box design from all that I have seen. Remember you have competition in the form of the Alienware 13.

To MSI, contact me for a good design change, I think most people will appreciate it.

  8. me too, but I do not think a lot about the aesthetic, just think now you can add a desktop gpu to your notebook.

  9. i like this laptop best best best laptop http://latestworldtechnology.com/

  10. This is the #1 laptop in its kind for school/business since it came out and will be for the next months until 14 nm tech emerges . Lighter than the famous 13″ MacBook Air yet crushing it in every aspect, 2.65 lb vs 3 lb. The only other 13″ competitor is Alienware with a deceiving dual core 5500U CPU. This MSI 4870HQ is 250%+ faster!
The laptop is extremely efficient, 65W adapter with a 45W CPU, <20W for the rest when maxed! With RAID0 at 1750$CA, its a steal. As for gaming, it should not be named so as laptops are not meant for serious gaming (UHD 4K+), the docking station is bloodily overpriced, 300$ extra for an empty case with a mediocre 450W PSU? Add a 500$ GPU and thats 800$+tx alone! Plus, I am very skeptical about the latency and throughput of external GPUs vs Desktops. Surely, no laptop matches a fully blown Desktop with a 5K monitor and a Multi-GPU setup for AutoCad and Gaming. I am pretty confident this will last my med-school years and was covered by my university 😉

  11. NDA?

  12. Jake Bloomfield

NDA = Non-disclosure agreement. It’s essentially a contractually binding document that companies/individuals sign when they receive an item or service that hasn’t yet been disclosed to the public.

It basically asks them not to disclose any unreleased information before a certain time and date.

  13. Thanks for the info

  14. Why would it have much latency, the bandwidth is the same as a PC and the GPU dock is basically a motherboard extension
