As 4K ultra-high-definition monitors migrate to mainstream price points, 5K UHD displays are set to become a new de-facto standard for ultra-premium segment.
Apple and Dell will not be alone with 5K (5120*2880) ultra-high-definition displays next year as more makers are going to join them, according to a media report. A number of display vendors are working on ultra HD 5K monitors for commercial, business and gaming market segments, reports DigiTimes web-site.
LG Display and Philips are among the companies to offer 5K UHD displays in 2015. Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest supplier of displays, will also likely introduce its own 5K UHD monitor next year.
Most panel makers, including AU Optronics, will focus monitor panel production on larger sizes in addition to 4K units, it is reported. LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics will likely be the leading suppliers of 5K panels and displays.
Global shipments of LCD displays are expected to reach 136 million units in 2014, 132 million units in 2015 and 128 million in 2017 because of declines of desktop PC sales.

KitGuru Says: The success of 5K displays will depend not only on their competitive pricing, but also on the success of 21:9 aspect ratio in general. At present many consider it too wide, but if a lot of people try it and find comfortable, such monitors may easily enter mainstream market.
