Seagate Technology on Tuesday introduced an all-new family of hard disk drives designed for enterprise-class network area storage (NAS) storage devices. The new HDDs will provide enhanced performance and reliability for NAS applications and will compete against Western Digital’s Red Pro series HDDs.
Seagate’s Enterprise NAS hard drives feature 7200rpm spindle speed, 128MB cache, Serial ATA-6Gb/s interface. The drives will be available in 2TB, 3TB, 4TB, 5TB and 6TB capacities. The manufacturer declares 216MB/s media to host transfer speed, which is pretty high performance for hard drives. The Enterprise NAS drives sport a special RV sensor for detecting and compensating for vibrational disturbances, error recovery control for data accuracy and protection as well as five year limited warranty.
The new Enterprise NAS drives are designed for 4-16 bay NAS devices that serve tens of users and require high reliability and a number of enterprise-class features. Seagate’s Enterprise NAS drives combine technologies from NAS and Enterprise Capacity families. For example, the Enterprise NAS HDD can sustain performance streaming and random read/write workloads, intrinsically adjusting and compensating based on usage, something typical NAS or consumer hard drives cannot.
The manufacturer claims that its new HDDs were developed for workloads up to 180TB per year. The drives are rated for 2 million hours MTBF.
“As the industry moves deeper into the cloud era, all businesses need solutions that enable applications to be accessed anywhere at any time,” said Scott Horn, Seagate vice president of marketing. “With our portfolio of NAS products, we can effectively target the needs of all types of businesses and scale with them as they grow in size. These drives are tailored to the requirements of businesses, ensuring customers have choices so they are only paying for the features they need.”
The new Enterprise NAS HDDs from Seagate will be available next year. Pricing has not been announced yet.
