Three day gaming binge kills Taiwanese man

After a 72-hour session playing combat games in a Taiwanese internet cafe, Mr Hsieh slumped down for what his neighbours thought was a nap. He never woke up. KitGuru takes a look at the details.

Regular travellers normally have a system to deal with long haul flights. We know that sitting in one position for an extended period of time is not good, so we'll normally engage in a number of behaviours to counter the effects of long term sitting, including:

  • Special socks
  • Loose clothing to allow blood flow
  • Getting up and moving around at regular intervals to boost circulation
  • Plenty of liquid refreshment – especially water
  • Massaging your legs and stretching
  • Popping half an aspirin to thin the blood

And that kind of behaviour is for a flight lasting less than 12 hours. Sitting in outdoor clothing at a computer terminal for a 72 hour game playing session might seem ‘soft', but it can put a serious strain on the human body.

Even so, any kind of illness is rare when gaming – as long as you are sensible.

Seeking wisdom on the subject, KitGuru spoke with Stewart Fletcher from Multiplay who told us that in 15 years of running more than 50 of the world's largest LAN party events, no one has as much as ‘fainted at their keyboard' at Insomnia. Essentially, the the events are very active and tournaments take place across multiple halls. Players are constantly active and there is no possibility for injury/illness.

KitGuru says: It seems that the authorities in Taiwan will be increasing patrols through game centres, making sure that people get up and move every two hours. We applaud this approach. Even this small precaution is likely to prevent any further incidents – despite what you might hear in the tabloids.

  1. Loving Insomnia since it moved to Coventry. So much space and the layouts seems pretty cool now.

    Don’t get me wrong, I spend most of the time at my PC in the same clothes I turned up in, but food and water are absolutely required. I seem to eat more when playing competitively anyway so win win on that front.

    Apart from last year (aug 14′) when someone pooped ON a chair in the showers O.o’ (how… did it even get up there)….

    Anyway, I’m sure Insomnia was more about games a few years ago as now it seems more of a company trade show in the main hall with a few games booths in between. Can’t blame them, they do have a rather large bill now I expect, can’t do it all for free.

  2. this is not even about gaming, why would i want to stay awake 72 freaking hours? thats just mental considering how your body is supposed to react to lack of sleep, specially uninterrupted awake hours
    no wonder the guy died

  3. did 101 hours while plowing snow at the Ottawa airport one year. Hallucinations started about 30 hours in.

  7. Aw man you beat me to writing that 2nd paragraph. “food and water” is a must. Also taking 5-15mins breaks to stretch like (if you got 3 floor house) go downstairs grab a quick snack and come back up. If there isn’t much blood circulation certain body areas might shutdown which isn’t good.

    I have experienced the almost 3day non stop gaming, about 4-5 close to the 72hrs line my body crashed and shutdown due to not enough blood movement. I did wake up later on that day, I just didn’t remember much of what happened before the crash, I just knew I close to the line and nothing more. After day 2 I was on energy drinks to keep me going but those can only last up to 2 can a day and half of the time I get the feeling they don’t work on me.

    Ten years ago, I was able to stay awake on nothing but energy drinks for 48 hours. Nowadays it’s a miracle if I manage 24 hours. I’m 25.

  11. I am 34 and the only way I can manage around 34 hours non stop, would be if I am working and then going to a sport bar at night, have a couple of drinks, but gaming? Ill crash.

    I’m totally with you on that one. Work can keep me awake for long periods of time, although my metal capabilities drop rapidly after the 12th consequtive hour of work, and then going out afterwards would also keep me awake, if I make sure not to drink too heavily. Sitting in a chair, a sofa or something like that for an attempted 24 hours is a sure-fire way to ensure that I won’t last that long. 😛
