WD to acquire enterprise PCIe SSD maker Skyera

Western Digital Corp. on Monday said that it has acquired Skyera, a developer of solid-state storage systems for scale-out cloud and enterprise data centers. The move will make WD more competitive on the market of enterprise-class solid-state storage solutions.

Skyera will be fully integrated into HGST in order to augment HGST’s existing solid-state storage capabilities and portfolio. The acquisition will allow HGST to broaden its scope of innovation to capture new and growing opportunities in data center storage infrastructure. The transaction also brings engineering talent and intellectual property that will further strengthen Western Digital technical expertise and resources.

HGST currently has among the broadest portfolios of solid-state storage solutions portfolio in the industry, from Tier 0 workloads to long-term storage and active archive. The deal with Skyera further strengthens capabilities of WD and HGST.

By combining Skyera's innovative flash platform with HGST's leading solid-state storage solutions and flash virtualization software we plan to provide breakthrough value and capabilities to help customers transform their cloud and enterprise data center infrastructure,” said Mike Cordano, president of HGST. “Flash solutions represent a large, exciting growth area for HGST and uniquely complement our existing portfolio.”

WD acquired Skyera in an all-cash transaction. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
