Kodak is going to lend its name to a line of smartphones

Kodak has announced that it is going to license its name out to a range of mobile devices that will come with new functionality to make it easier to share and print images. The company's first smartphone attempt will be revealed at CES later this month.

This smartphone will be closely followed by a “4G handset, a tablet and a connected camera”, during the second half of 2015. The hardware itself isn't actually built by Kodak but rather a company by the name of Bullitt Group. This UK based company has made a range of rugged smartphones for construction companies in the past.

Bullitt Mobile CEO, Oliver Schulte, said in a press release that “Kodak is one of the world's most recognizable brands. It is trusted by consumers as a marque of quality and innovation. We've taken that heritage and used it to inspire a range of beautifully designed devices that will let users take great pictures and edit, share, store and print them in an instant.”

Kodak licensing its name out is a new business strategy, born from a radical restructuring that saved the company from bankruptcy last year. Unfortunately for Kodak, the mobile market can be tough to break in to, so we shall have to wait and see how it goes.

KitGuru Says: Many companies are trying to enter the mobile market at the moment, Amazon famously tried and swiftly failed earlier this year with the Fire Phone. Kodak isn't building these devices but it still has its brand on the line. What do you guys think of this?
