Lite-On Group readies new brand for affordable SSDs

Lite-On Group, a large conglomerate of hardware manufacturers, is working on a new lineup of inexpensive solid-state drives. The new Zeta family of SSDs will be based on inexpensive controllers as well as on NAND flash memory from SK Hynix, which is pretty rare on the market of retail storage solutions.

Lite-On is not new to the market of solid-state drives. For many years it has been selling Plextor-branded SSDs as a part of PLDS (Philips Lite-On Digital Systems). Plextor SSDs address the high-end of the market thanks to exclusive technologies, high-quality Toshiba NAND flash memory, Marvell controllers and advanced firmware.

In a bid to address the market of inexpensive solid-state drives, Lite-On is working on all-new Zeta family of SSDs that will be based on Silicon Motion SM2246EN controller and 16nm MLC NAND from SK Hynix, reports Expreview. The drives will come in 2.5”/7mm form-factor, sport Serial ATA-6Gb/s interface and will be available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacities.

Performance of Lite-On Zeta will not be high: maximum read speed is projected to be 520MB/s, whereas maximum write speed will vary from 150MB/s to 430MB/s, depending on the model. Keeping in mind that the main feature of Zeta is expected to be low price, actual performance figures of the product family will not be very important.

KitGuru Says: It is unlikely that Lite-On Zeta SSDs will feature any advanced technologies from Plextor. One thing that is guaranteed about the new product family is that they will be very affordable. Unfortunately, it is unclear whether Lite-On Group plans to sell them on well-developed markets.
