Modders will soon be able to create new quests and content for The Witcher 3

Ahead of The Witcher 3's launch in 2015, CD Projekt Red promised mod tools as a free DLC post-launch. The mod kit for the game ended up being fairly minimal, offering users ways to edit textures but not much else. Fortunately, CD Projekt Red has now announced plans to expand the game's mod support with a more comprehensive editor.

The new mod editor for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be released for free in 2024. The new tools will allow creators to create their own questlines, or edit existing content. This will of course pave the way for more ambitious mods, similar to some of the ones we've seen for titles like Skyrim.

The new mod editor will only be available on PC and there don't seem to be any plans to support mods in The Witcher 3 on any of the console versions.

We don't have a specific release date yet and of course, it will also take time for creators to generate new content and learn the tools, but this still opens the door for a bright future for the game.

KitGuru Says: I do wonder if CD Projekt Red's move away from REDEngine spurred this on. The original mod tools released for The Witcher 3 were more limited than anticipated, but now that CDPR is moving away from its in-house engine, it does make sense to hand over more of the tools to the community to keep its older games alive. Perhaps we'll see something similar for Cyberpunk 2077 eventually as well.
