2nd-gen Steam Deck is two or three years away

Out of nowhere Valve announced a massive upgrade to the Steam Deck, with the handheld refresh featuring a bigger HDR OLED panel running at 90hz; improvements to battery life; increased storage and more. That said, a full-on Steam Deck 2 is also on the way – though don’t expect it to come out for the next 2-3 years.

Following the official announcement of the OLED Steam Deck, the product’s designer Lawrence Yang spoke to Bloomberg about the refresh while also teasing that a proper 2nd generation Deck is in the works, featuring a “next-generation” increase in power.

Briefly touching on the 2nd generation handheld, Yang stated “A lot of folks at the company are excited about this product. We are very invested in the Steam Deck”. Your excitement will have to wait a bit however, as according to Yang the Steam Deck 2 won’t be available for two or three more years at the very least.

That said, considering the fact that the Steam Deck refresh appears to be fixing pretty much every issue with the first-gen product, the need for a Steam Deck 2 is now much less dire. It will be interesting to see what the team has planned for the Deck 2, especially since the OLED model already brings a lot of new things to the table.
