Yes, they’re still making new arcade games

Arcade cabinets have a special place in a lot of gamers hearts, whether they were around during the 80's boom and bust with some of the kings of the medium, or came into it in the 90's with epic Sega Rally tournaments among friends. Whatever their memories of the local arcade, they're likely fond, even if they haven't been to one in years. Some do still exist though and that means that new arcade games need to be made, which is exactly what was being shown off at the recent EAG 2015 show.

Of screen-footage captures are rarely good. Apologies.

As you might expect, Time Crisis 5 drew a lot of crowds, even if the graphics do look like they come from early on in the Xbox 360 era. Arcade Belgium managed to nab some gameplay footage if you're interested in seeing what Bandai Namco has been working on. Also, hilarious protagonist hair-styles. Jurassic Park has a new game too, featuring the traditional car-seat cabinet design and turret based gameplay. It looks fun, if-again, horribly aesthetically presented. Tell me this game doesn't look like its visuals didn't come straight from a Wii bargain bin title: [yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRMof-Jjudw']

Seriously, the trucks in-game don't even have shadows.

Other notable games picked up by ArcadeHeroes include a GoGoPony stand, which looks like a Kawaii version of those grand national racing games that are exhausting and make you look like a tool, despite being hilarious if in a group. There was also a new Showdown multiplayer cabinet and new Walking Dead and WWE pinball machines.

KitGuru Says: What's everyone's favourite arcade shooter? As much fun as I would say the original Time Crisis is, I have to go House of the Dead 2. Nothing beats that game for funny/awful voice acting and decent action.

Sidenote, it's great fun on the Wii with a pair of revolver accessories.

  1. From the sounds of it there are no longer companies developing hardware for the arcades and the tech is stuck in the late 90’s -2000 era i’d guess. So it’s nice that some software companies are kind enough to still develop new IP for the hardware – seeing as there can’t be much profit to be made these days in arcade games.

  2. this awesome batman arcade game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wo9Z6-KYr4

Last year in the summer i went to the arcades where i used to live and i was shocked how much had changed since the last time i went there over 15 years ago. Firstly they were packed from all age groups. Secondly all they had was fruit machines/penny drops/gambiling poker etc i went to about 6 arcades and came across one or two proper games

  3. Sega are making modern hardware based on pc’s rather than consoles, same with most of the major brands (E.g Namco, Capcom, Nintendo etc),although I’ve rarely seen the high powered machines outside of japan. I think the issue is more the fact do arcades really need bleeding edge graphics, at most you drop some coins in and play for a short period of time and move on. To me it would seem a waste of time adding all those graphics for someone to enjoy for at most a few minutes of their life

  4. I see, so no more of the custom hardware like the old days. Looking at the graphics in the video’s here they must be pretty basic PC’s, possibly even just using integrated GPU’s.

  5. Depends on what games they have running, e.g fighting games like virtua fighter, tekken etc need to at least equal the consoles in power (more often they’re actually more powerful). I’ve seen some a while back (sorry I cannot remember the site that was selling) where they offered different internal components for different price points but with the same cabinet. Also I’d hazard a guess it’s whether the customer wants to future proof the cabinet e.g get the most powerful kit then they can do a simple hard drive swap (or disk swap) to get a different game on the generic cabinet (I know SEGA do this a lot, have done since the NAOMI and NAOMI 2 cabinet days with the gd-roms)

  6. http://segaretro.org/Nu I “think” that is the latest sega arcade machine…not 100% sure
