LG debuts 34-inch ultra-wide display with AMD FreeSync

LG Electronics, the world’ largest maker of ultra-wide monitors, has announced the world’s first 21:9 display with beyond full-HD resolution and AMD FreeSync technology. The unique display was developed primarily for gamers and multimedia enthusiasts, but given its unique capabilities, even some professionals may find it useful.

The LG 34UM67 is the company’s first 21:9 ultra-wide gaming monitor that is designed specifically for demanding gamers. The new 34” display is based on an advanced in-plane switching (IPS) panel with 3440*1440 resolution and 178° viewing angle that is calibrated to accurately recreate colours across over 99 per cent of the sRGB colour space. The monitor supports DisplayPort 1.2a as well as Thunderbolt 2.0 interfaces. While refresh rate of the display is unknown, do not expect it to be high (60Hz is a reasonably number).

The main capability of the LG 34UM67 display for gamers is support for AMD FreeSync technology that enables the display to dynamically match its refresh rate with a GPU’s rendering rate, on a frame-by-frame basis, to produce a smoother, low latency, gaming or movie watching experience.

“AMD FreeSync technology is an innovative monitor technology, based on free and open industry standards, to eliminate the tearing and stuttering that has plagued PC gaming for 30 years,” said Roy Taylor, corporate vice president of ISV/IHV partner group at AMD. “We are pleased that LG Electronics stands with us with truly exciting AMD FreeSync-ready displays like the LG UltraWide Gaming Monitor.”

While the LG 34UM67 is a rather impressive (unfortunately, it does not support 4K ultra-high-definition resolution) monitor, LG said no word regarding availability timeframe or price.

KitGuru Says: AMD’s FreeSync technology seems to be facing a good start. A 34” premium IPS display will inevitably attract attention of gamers and technology enthusiasts. Besides, remember that Samsung will introduce a host of FreeSync-supporting monitors in March.
