AMD readies ‘Caribbean Islands’ graphics processors – report

Advanced Micro Devices is working on a new family of graphics processing units code-named “Caribbean Islands”. At present the details about the new lineup of graphics products are absent. The only thing that is known is that AMD plans to release the new graphics processors next summer.

Fudzilla reports that AMD is preparing to introduce its “Caribbean Islands” product line between June and August, 2015. At present it is unknown how many graphics processors the new family will include and what kind of new features it will support. It is also unknown what process technology will be used to manufacture the new GPUs.

It should be noted that AMD’s product families like Southern Islands, Northern Islands and other do not necessarily include graphics chips based on the same architecture. Therefore, Caribbean Islands family may include GPUs based on the GCN 1.2, the GCN 1.3 and other architectures.

It is unknown whether AMD Radeon code-named Fiji will belongs to the Caribbean Islands family or not.

AMD has already used names after Caribbean islands, such Antilles, Cayman, Turks and Caicos.

AMD did not comment on the news-story.
