Asustek unveils WQHD IPS display with 120Hz/144Hz refresh rate

The vast majority of large gaming monitors with extreme refresh rates of 120Hz or 144Hz are based on TN+film panels that may be fast, but which cannot boast with truly accurate colour reproduction or superior viewing angles. However, it looks like the things are going to change. Asustek Computer introduced its new 120Hz/144Hz display based on an IPS panel at the Consumer Electronics 2015 show.

The Asus MG279Q 27” monitor boasts a high-quality in-plane switching panel with 2560*1440 resolution as well as very high refresh rates. At present the company declares 120Hz refresh rate and is “working on certifying 144Hz ready for launch”. The display features DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, two HDMI ports and a mobile high-definition link (MHL) 2.0 connectors. The device also sports a dual-port USB 3.0 hub.

“The upcoming MG279Q is a gaming monitor focus on giving gamers who demand superior viewing angles and color reproduction a new choice when it comes to a low response and high refresh rate monitor,” a statement by Asus reads.

Asustek Computer did not reveal when it plans to launch the MG279Q monitor officially. Obviously, it is unclear how high the price will be. Still, given the fact that the MG279Q is positioned as a mainstream solution, do not expect its price to be too high.

KitGuru Says: The Asus MG279Q 27” is a very good display for those, who want to have extreme refresh rates along with high resolution and high-quality colour reproduction. Unfortunately, the size of the display is not truly large by modern standards. Still, its price is also not going to be too high…

  1. Awesome! Have been sticking with TN just because I prefer a high refresh rate. Maybe now I’ll finally get some nice color with it.

  2. Make a 24″ version of this, and I’ll buy it!

  3. Fantastic news! Been calling for years for high refresh rates at higher than 1080p and with an IPS display, great job to Asus for being first to make it to market with this!

  4. Wow, finally! Looks like Overlord will finally have some competition! This will probably be far more expensive than Overlord though. ASUS is now poised to have the first G-Sync’d WQHD IPS monitor if they can figure out how to rig G-Sync onto it; I’m sure that won’t be a problem given that they keep releasing G-Sync’d versions of other monitors.

  6. Yes, as an overclocked unit from a not well-known brand as an import – making it a potentially very risky proposition…

  7. What is the response time?

  8. And that’s a fair point. I was just pointing out that conceptually this is not new. Tom’s in fact gave Overlord a Smart Buy award for 2014 and named their monitor one of the top for gaming.

What ASUS is doing is great, because ideally it prompts other major manufactures to perk up.

  9. I’m Just waiting for Asus to release a 4k FreeSync 60Hz IPS monitor…. I would buy it in a heart beat!

  10. You mean Tom’s Hardware? The site that sold-out many years ago and its now only running ads and fake reviews paid by the manufacturers?
    That Tom’s Hardware?
Smart Buy award. ROFL. Good luck with that.

Overlord sell overclock-able monitors with zero guarantees. Many people have reported they lost the “lottery”. There are laws for these kind of scams.

  11. If this has a strobing backlight/anti motion blur it will be an instant buy

  12. “Unfortunately, the size of the display is not truly large by modern standards.”

Huh? 27″ is pretty large for a display.

  13. 5ms GTG
