Asustek preps 4K UHD IPS display with Nvidia G-Sync technology

Asustek Computer has announced a new ultra-high-definition (UHD) display for gamers that features a high-quality in-plane switching (IPS) panel along with Nvidia Corp.’s G-Sync technology. The PG27AQ monitor promises to be among the best premium displays for gamers this year.

The Asus ROG Swift PG27AQ features a 27” IPS panel with 3840*2160 resolution, 16:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio, 300cd/m² brightness, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 178° viewing angle, fast response time, 60Hz refresh rate and so on. The display sports DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI inputs. The new premium gaming display also boasts with anti-glare coating as well as anti-flicker technologies.

Thanks to Nvidia’s G-Sync technology, the new ROG Swift PG27AQ is able to dynamically match its refresh rate with Nvidia GPU’s rendering rate in order to produce a smoother, low latency, gaming or movie watching experience.

The PG27AQ monitor features an ergonomic design with full tilt, swivel, pivot and height adjustment, as well as a smart cable-management system in a super narrow bezel design.

Unfortunately, due to limitations of modern display interconnection standards (and the lack of appropriate display scaler chips), the device misses extreme refresh rates (e.g., 120Hz or 144Hz) since it is simply impossible to transmit UHD images at 120Hz – 144Hz rate from a graphics card to a display at present. As a consequence, the new monitor will not be able to take full advantage of the G-Sync technology in fast-action first-person shooter and similar games.

Asustek Computer has demonstrated the new display at the Consumer Electronics Show, which means that the product is generally ready and is a couple of months away from the market.

Asus positions its ROG Swift PG27AQ monitor as a premium solution for gamers. As a result, do not expect this product to be affordable, especially keeping in mind that it is equipped with Nvidia G-Sync technology. Still, since it is a 27″ display, it will not be too expensive as well.

KitGuru Says: Last year the majority of Nvidia G-Sync-supporting displays featured TN panels with all their drawbacks. While this was clearly conditioned by the fact that many gamers demand high refresh rates, high-quality IPS or *VA monitors with G-Sync were clearly missed by many. Fortunately, the situation is getting better this year and gamers will finally have a choice between fast refresh rates and fine colour reproduction.

  1. Eh. At lowier FPS, which you get at 4k, G-sync/freesync are at their best. Saying you won’t get full potential of g-sync because of the lack of 144 hz seems going overboard. At high Hz g-sync/freesync matter the least.
