MediaTek introduces its first platform for wearable devices

MediaTek, a leading designer of inexpensive application processors for smartphones, has introduced its first platform for wearable computing devices based on Google Android Wear software. This is the first highly-integrated solution for wearable devices from a maker of affordable mobile chips.

MediaTek MT2601 is powered by two ARM Cortex-A7 1.2 GHz general-purpose processing cores and ARM Mali-400 MP graphics processing unit, it supports 960*640 display resolution. The MT2601 supports wireless connectivity SoC MT6630 for Bluetooth. The footprint of the whole solution is less than 480mm². The small size is a requirement for wearables, such as health and fitness trackers, smartwatches, location tracking and various other categories. The solution is fully compatible with Google Android Wear.

KitGuru Says: MediaTek’s decision to enter the market of platforms for wearables is an event that is hard to overestimate. While MediaTek may not be the developer of the highest-performing smartphone SoCs, it is among the leaders when it comes to the market of high-volume smartphones. Therefore, if MediaTek feels that it makes sense to unveil something for wearables, it most likely does.
