Ubisoft reinstates fraudulent keys bought with stolen credit card

Last week, Ubisoft made the unpopular decision to deactivate a lot of CD Keys bought from sites like G2A and Kinguin. Apparently all of the keys being taken away were originally paid for with a stolen credit card. However, in a sudden turn of events, Ubisoft has begun reinstating some of the stolen keys.

Those who had already activated and begun playing their copy of Far Cry 4 or Assassin's Creed Unity will once again find the game sitting in their uPlay account. Those of you who had yet to launch any of the revoked titles will be out of luck.

It is worth noting that Ubisoft doesn't have to do this, technically all of the deactivated keys were stolen property. However, it is nice to see that the company is changing its mind and deciding to not punish the consumers who were already enjoying the games.

Speaking to Eurogamer, a Ubisoft rep said: “After further investigation into the matter of keys that were fraudulently purchased on EA's Origin store, we are reinstating keys for consumers who already had successfully activated and started playing the games.”

“Any remaining fraudulently obtained and resold keys have been deactivated.”

KitGuru Says: We actually heard from a few of our readers affected by the key removals. Let us know if your game has been reinstated at this point. This won't save Ubisoft's dwindling reputation but it is still a good PR move.

  1. So G2A and Kinguin are a fraud now?

  2. No but their supplyers may be

  3. Wish I’d activated Unity on my NVidia key (that was supplied by Kinguin as a replacement) now!

  4. These 2 sites are legit, bought many games from them over the years and rarely had problems (and even when there were problems, they solved them pretty fast), the current issue was with a specific seller (any1 with original unused game keys can sign up on these sites and sell on them), like the article said, whomever that seller was, used a stolen credit card to buy uplay games from origin, then took the keys origin gave him and put them on sale on g2a/kinguin, the people who bought these keys ended up getting punished for it, there is always a small risk when buying game keys online because you can’t exactly be 100% sure where they came from..

  5. not the first time i’ve been given a dodgy key from G2A, I am forced to purchase that $1 guard because i’ve paid and multiple times the key just doesn’t work, They always investigate and send me a key that works in the end =)

But this Ubisoft thing worries me so I will just stick to paying $5-6 extra and buy from Steam Directly…I did it with GTA V

  6. well, I never saw that coming…….congrats Ubi for surprising me in a good way.

  7. G2A is a Joke..
there are some good key sites out there as MMOGA for example

  8. does this mean I can still buy this game for 20$ and play it right after I got the key without the key being banned?

  9. NO THEY HAVE NOT !!!!!
Mine are still gone. I have slow broadband it would talk me a week to download the games again.

I WILL STILL NEVER EVER EVER BUY ANOTHER UBISOFT GAME.

  10. Bought several games there, never had a problem though. It’s stupid how the shield has to be paid. -.-

  11. Good thing there are feedbacks, but then it’s stolen and it was a little bit too late to know that they were ‘scammed’

  12. I am pretty sure the files on your PC are not uninstalled, the game was just removed.

  13. Thanks Karl, I deleted them, but as I said, my games aren’t back. I didn’t use the two companies involved, they just banned foreign keys. There is other ways of getting the games, and it brakes my lift time ban on doing it that way. Sad, as I said, I will never buy Ubisoft again.

  14. This is stupid! Ubisoft shouldnt have done this! let thieves be thieves. You know I actually paid for this game full price and it pisses me off to see that people are getting away with blatant stealing. I hope this never happens again.

  15. go cry somewhere else, you stole the game and are angry that you cant get it back. shame on you.
