LG Display to use the same OLED technology as Samsung

LG Display and Universal Display Corp. announced this week that the former has licensed UniversalPHOLED technology from the latter. In addition, LG signed a supply agreement with Universal Display under which it will purchase supplemental material from the company. It is noteworthy that Samsung Electronics also uses technologies and materials from Universal Display for its AMOLED panels.

Under the license agreement, Universal Display has granted LG Display non-exclusive license rights under various patents owned or controlled by Universal Display to manufacture and sell OLED displays. The product lineup will include various ultra-high-definition models ranging from 55”, 65” and 77” in flexible, curved and flat form-factors. LG Display will pay Universal Display license fees and running royalties on its sales of these licensed products over the term of the agreement. Additionally, Universal Display will supply phosphorescent materials to LG Display for use in its licensed products. The agreements run through December 31, 2022.

Abramson, president and chief executive officer of Universal Display. “We look forward to the continued collaboration in support of LGD’s advancements in expanding the thriving OLED product roadmap, including the advent of new form factors that redefine what a display can and will be.”

At present LG uses OLED technologies and phosphorescent materials from Kodak. Materials from Universal Display are more efficient than materials from Kodak, which will make LG’s displays brighter, more energy efficient and will improve their colour gamut.

KitGuru Says: The decision to switch supplier of technologies and phosphorescent materials is clearly a strategic choice by LG. Usage of UniversalPHOLED will help to improve quality of LG’s OLED displays and TVs and will make them as good as Samsung’s AMOLED screens, which are traditionally used for smartphones. Eventually, it will let LG develop ultra-high-definition TVs with resolutions beyond 4K (3840*2160).
