Qualcomm to make updated Snapdragon 810 for Samsung Galaxy S6

Qualcomm is apparently going to provide Samsung with an updated version of the most recent Snapdragon 810 mobile CPU, after rumors began suggesting that the company would be moving ahead with its own Exynos chip for the upcoming Galaxy S6 flagship.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Qualcomm is expected to give Samsung a new version of the Snapdragon 810, with improved temperature management capabilities in order to avoid overheating. However, given that the Galaxy S6 is expected in just a couple of months time, it is not clear as to whether Samsung will have time to incorporate the new chip with its device.

Sources close with Samsung have said that the firm's tests revealed that the Snapdragon 810 processor simply ran too hot for their liking. However, LG refuted the claim, stating that it had found the chip's performance to be “quite satisfactory”.

Qualcomm on the other hand merely commented by saying: “Snapdragon 810 remains on track and we expect commercial devices to be available in 1H 2015.”

Samsung's Galaxy S6 flagship is expected to launch in March, around the same time as the HTC One M9, which is also rumored to feature the Snapdragon 810 processor.

KitGuru Says: Samsung may only include the Qualcomm chip in the North American market version of the Galaxy S6 and sell an Exynos powered version internationally. Samsung has been known to differentiate phone specs in the past with the Samsung Galaxy S3, which featured a Quad-Core CPU in the international version and a dual core in the American model.
