The original 20th Anniversary Edition PlayStation 4 console has been auctioned off for just under $130,000 in Japan. The first of the 12,300 units was saved by Sony for a charity auction, which raised $129,000, Sony then matched this making for a total donation of $258,000 for a Japanese charity.
The anniversary edition console was sold via Yahoo! Auctions and was only open to Japanese bidders. The console ended up with over 1500 bids before closing yesterday on the 25th of January. A Sony representative commented on the auction while speaking to The Wall Street Journal: “We appreciate all who participated in the auction and are surprised at the highest bid price, which was higher than our expectations”.
Sony is now reaching out to the bid winner to arrange payment and will be donating the proceeds to a Japanese children charity.
Sony launched the 20th Anniversary Edition PlayStation 4 consoles at the end of last year, they originally sold £399.99 in the UK, aside from a one off sales event in London, which saw some people walk away with a PS4 for just £19.94. Many of these units ended up on eBay, selling for well over £1000.

KitGuru Says: A lot of Anniversary Edition PS4 consoles ended up on eBay, generating a pretty big profit for those who managed to buy one. At least the original console was able to make some money for a good cause.
Good god, nice to see it went to charity though.
