Apple gives game developers credit for App Store success

Apple's App Store wouldn't have become such a huge success if it wasn't for the support of game developers, according to the company's Vice President of iPhone and iOS Product Marketing, Greg Joswiak, speaking to developers while accepting the first ever Technical Impact Award from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences.

Joswiak said that while Apple knew that the App Store would be something new, it didn't realise how impactful it would become with time: “The App Store has forever changed software development, software distribution, because it levels the playing field between the big developers, the small developers.”

“The success of the App Store is really tied to this incredibly diverse developer community we have, they make it happen with their incredible apps, their amazing games. And it's because games are so much fun and addictive. Users love them and they do pay for them.”

Since launch, the App Store has generated $25 billion for developers, with $10 billion of it coming from the last year alone.
