Facebook’s new privacy policy is worrying

Facebook has once again updated its privacy policy but it may be taking things too far in an effort to show you targeted ads. The new policy allows Facebook to check up on what you are doing on other apps and websites that have nothing to do with the social network.

You would expect Facebook to be aware of what you are doing on its own site or applications but the company is now spreading its reach beyond that. The company has said in the past that its users prefer to see more personally targeted ads but that probably isn't so true when it comes at the cost of privacy.

These privacy changes went in to effect on the 30th of January for all users, it isn't an opt-in system. You can opt out of targeted ads on the Facebook app but there is no clarification as to whether this will also affect what Facebook tracks.

According to reports, the European privacy squad is already on the case and is looking in to the new issue with Facebook's privacy.

KitGuru Says: Facebook extending its tracking beyond its own apps is worrying. There should be an opt-out system at the very least.

  1. “Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.”

    is not working
And Facebook has become corporate malware…

  2. at this pace i’m going to start using my web browser in a freaking sandbox everytime i want to check my FB. this is starting to get out of hand, specially if you consider the fact that to be able to track what you do in other apps that are not linked to FB you HAVE TO HAVE some kind of software from FB running, which i never accepted to have installed in my system, so by definition is a malware and/or trojan horse, ergo virus, ergo ilegal

  3. The part that tracks you when you are on other websites is usually facebook comments or iframes, just use ghostery to block all those nasy tracking thingys.

  4. nice to know but the issue still remains: they are tracking me without me explicitly allowing it

  5. So that’s the reason why the things i search on the internet show up as adverts on facebook -_-

  6. well yes that’s how adverts work in general.

  7. “This weekend we are running a little competition on our Facebook page…” Looks like I won’t be winning anything then.

  8. By having an account you are allowing it.

  9. ctrl+shit+N

  10. What software do you use to virtualize your browser? I’ve come across a few before but can’t remember them.

  11. oh, cmon, you know what i mean, i know they are tracking me in webs linked to FB, but my issue is they tracking me in webs completely unrelated to FB. i understand them tracking me while using FB or related to them, but i dont want them to read how many times i access my mail or at what hour, that to me is crossing a line

  12. if i remember right someone recommended me the comodo suite

  13. Then you have to delete your account. That’s the way it works.
But if the issue is advertising, adblock is the solution!
