Hatred has caused quite a stir since its initial announcement, there have been petitions to stop its development, it was removed and reinstated on Steam Greenlight but the development team is still keen to release the game. Although it may have trouble getting on to consoles as the ESRB ratings board has given the game an ‘Adults Only' rating in the US and Canada.
The developer wrote on its official forum that it would have preferred an M+ rating but insists that fans would not be happy with the game in a cut down state: “Well, I'm not quite convinced why Hatred got AO rating while it lacks any sexual content, but it's still some kind of achievement to have the second game in history getting AO rating for violence and harsh language only. Even if this violence isn't really that bad and this harsh language isn't overused”.
It is very rare for a game to receive an Adults Only rating based on violence and harsh language alone. This does mean that there may be complications trying to bring the game to the Xbox One or PS4.
“I would prefer to get a standard M+ rating, because with AO we will have problems to to get to consoles in the future, but on the other hand I think you guys (our fans) would be disappointed with it”.
The dev team could edit the game's content to try for a lower rating but it doesn't seem like they are going to go down that route.

KitGuru Says: Hatred may end up being a PC only title due to the AO rating, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It will be interesting to see if the game still comes to Steam though as the service currently has no AO rated titles for sale.
Complete bullshit. The movie Rampage didn’t get the movie equivalent of AO, and its the same exact thing in movie form. This rating is absolutely retarded. There has been way more violence in different games. People are only upset at the premise, which is a crap reason.
I am suprised. A 18+ rating was guaranteed, but adult-only? Sort of beside the point though – people are going to buy it regardless of the rating 🙂
Parents complain about this game being to violent, but bought there kids GTA 5 and CoD. end of the story the kids are still virtually killing
Yeah I would have to say the rating is irrelevant because people are going to buy it if they want it. However, the point of the game should definitely earn it an adult rating. The content is crap compared to more popular controversial games like GTA. At least in those games there are somewhat realistic story lines and you can you can choose your crimes instead of being limited to just one heinous crime. I would even say its worse than the postal series where you at least get some humor out of the ridiculousness.
I doubt parents that complain about this game don’t complain about GTA… and not end of story because the context is much worse from a moral standpoint (not to be confused with ethical).
And at the end of the day you know what they say, if you dont like the game, dont play it. And besides there are games wich much more violence in them but no one ever made a big drama about them
What’s the first game that got AO with just violence and language? Postal?
It’s a simple matter of double-standards. because Hatred is against the norms, they decided that it should get that rating instead. But well, it being the 2nd game to have and AO rating isn’t that bad, as it would boost sales, with many people buying it thinking “What’s in this game that caused it to have that kind of rating?”
