Intel could delay ‘Skylake-S’ processors to October – document

Intel Corp. has set a very broad product introduction window for its code-named “Skylake-S” microprocessors that it allows the chipmaker to release its new microprocessors as late as in October, which means rather limited availability of such desktop chips this calendar year.

An excerpt presumably from an Intel’s document for partners (published by Chinese VR-Zone web-site) indicates that the world’s largest maker of central processing units plans to introduce its new code-named “Skylake-S” processors between August and October. Previously it was reported that the company intends to initiate shipments of such CPUs in late August, but the guidance allows the company to further delay product launch to October.

The excerpt from the document specifically notes that neither Intel, nor its partners, should advertise “Skylake-S” microprocessors ahead of official introduction. It is possible that Intel formally reveals the “Skylake-S” chips at the Intel Developer Forum in December and starts actual shipments in late-September or early-October.

It is also noteworthy that Intel has slightly changed plans regarding its LGA1151 processors. This year the company will release quad-core “Skylake-S” chips featuring GT2-class graphics and 95W, 65W or 35W thermal design power as well as dual-core “Skylake-S” CPUs sporting GT2-class graphics with 65W or 35W TDP. Previously Intel planned to offer quad-core “Skylake-S” processors in LGA form-factor with high-performance GT4e graphics core featuring 72 stream processors. Apparently, the company no longer wants to offer LGA desktop chips with high-performance graphics.

Intel did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: If the information is not outdated, then it looks like availability of systems featuring “Skylake-S” processors will be limited this year. Enthusiasts will likely be able to buy enough Intel Core i7/i5 processors featuring the new cores and unlocked multiplier, but it will take a while before PC makers ramp up “Skylake-S” systems.

The launch of the new Intel Core Ultra 200S family of CPUs along with Z890 motherboards was a thorny process. KitGuru suffered along with pretty much every other review site on the planet and you may have noticed we held off from reviewing of the Core Ultra 9 285K, Core Ultra 7 265K and Core Ultra 5 245K as it is clear to us that Intel has some work to do before this platform is ready for action.
