Earlier this year, AMD launched the Ryzen 7040U series of processors, packing Zen4 cores for efficient, thin and light laptops. Now, AMD is debuting two more laptop chips, utilising the Zen4c architecture.
The Ryzen 7040U series is spearheaded by the Ryzen 7 7840U with 8 cores and 16 threads, followed by the 6-core Ryzen 5 7640U and 7540U processors. Now, AMD is adding the Ryzen 5 7545U and Ryzen 3 7440U with Zen4c cores to the line-up. The former is a 6C/12T processor with up to 4.9GHz boost speeds and up to 30W TDP, while the latter is a 4C/8T processor with 4.7GHz boost speed.
Zen4c is a more efficient revision of the Zen4 architecture specifically targeting low-power laptops. A Zen4c core uses up 35 percent less area than a standard Zen4 core. In the graphs above, you can see how Zen4 and Zen4c both scale, using the Ryzen 5 7540U and 7545U for comparison. AMD has found that two full Zen 4 cores combined with four Zen4c cores provides the best combination of performance and efficiency.
These new Zen4c chips still support all the key features you would expect too. All cores still use the same instruction set, have the same IPC and utilise SMT to boost multi-threaded workloads.
We don't yet know when the first laptops with these processors will be available but we would expect that to change pretty soon.
