The Resident Evil series is by far Capcom’s biggest, with the publisher recently reporting that the franchise has sold over 150 million copies in total. This increasing success has afforded them the opportunity to go bigger with each successive entry – with Resident Evil 9 now said to have the “biggest budget of the series.”
As reported by known Resident Evil insider Dusk Golem, the leaker claimed via their Discord (and shared by Insider-Gaming) that Resident Evil 9 has been in development since 2018 and is planned to release some time in 2025, meaning it will have had 7 years in development when all is said and done.
Additionally, the upcoming unannounced sequel is reportedly the most costly entry in the franchise’s history, with Dusk Golem stating: “The two things I've said about it publicly is RE9 is the biggest budget & longest development time of any RE game to date.”
In discussing some of the reasons as to why the game is taking so long to develop, Dusk Golem continued, “Capcom have considered RE9 to be a closing chapter for a few things to move onto from there to new story arcs and focuses, take the series in new directions. So RE9 is sorta' both a closing & beginning chapter for things in Capcom's eyes.”
After straying away from the series’ roots with Resident Evil 6, Capcom went back to the drawing board, introducing Resident Evil VII: Biohazard with a new protagonist and a whole different playable perspective. The story of Ethan Hunt then continued with Resident Evil Village. It will be interesting to see what the team has planned for RE9 – especially with it seemingly being the end of the trilogy.
