Sales of Sony PlayStation 4 surpass 20.2 million units worldwide

Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 continues to demonstrate incredible sales dynamics never seen before in the history of video game consoles. At the Game Developers Conference the platform holder revealed that cumulative sales of PS4 systems had surpassed 20 million units worldwide.

As of the 1st of March, 2015, sales of Sony PlayStation 4 to end users surpassed 20.2 million units, according to estimates by Sony. In calendar 2015 the company managed to sell around 1.7 million PlayStation 4 consoles, despite of the fact that sales of hardware are traditionally slow in the first quarter. The console demonstrates the fastest and strongest growth in PlayStation hardware history.

“We are so grateful for the enormous support from PlayStation fans worldwide, and we are truly humbled that gamers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play,” said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver unique and interactive entertainment experiences powered by the network and the PS4 system’s deep social capabilities.”

As reported back in January, Sony PlayStation 4 outsells not only its predecessor in the same period of its lifecycle, but also PlayStation 2, which is the most successful game console ever. While it is unlikely that Sony’s current system will have a life-cycle comparable to that of its legendary ancestor, it is likely that the company will still sell loads of its PS4 consoles.

At present Sony PlayStation 4 system is available in 123 countries and regions worldwide. Wide availability and moderate price are believed to be keys to success of Sony’s PS4.

KitGuru Says: Sales dynamics of Sony’s PlayStation 4 continues to impress. What is especially important for the personal computer world is that with every PS4 sold, Advanced Micro Devices gets additional money, which it needs to stay competitive against Intel and Nvidia.
