What games did you never get working?

With all of the problems AAA games have had in the past six months, it would be easy to remember the past through rose tinted glasses, whereby all of our games worked perfectly. “We didn't need day one patches back in my day,” we say in comment threads and in conversations with fellow outraged games. But it wasn't all fast load times and pristine experiences in the past either, even if was a little less ridiculous than what the Master Chief Collection has offered as of late.

And sometimes, even with the efforts of listening developers and a reasonably large numbers of complainers, some problems are just never fixed.

With that in mind, I thought it might be interesting to see if any of you ever ran into a persistent problem or perhaps an onslaught of many, that eventually made you give up on playing a game altogether. To get things started, I thought I would offer a story of my own frustrated attempts to play a game from a few years ago.

Oh, it's you again.

Brutal Legend

While today Double Fine might be known for its many small projects and to some extent, its inability to deliver on certain promises, it wasn't that long ago that it would pour all of its efforts into big, multi-year projects. Games like Psychonauts, which are remembered by many as pinnacles of mid-00s gaming. Still, Brutal Legend, released in 2009 wasn't quite so well received, despite the fact that it feature a still-relatively-popular Jack Black, a unique Metal-themed sound track and an interesting mix of RTS and third person action mechanics.

Being a fan of lots of that stuff, I was quite keen to try it out when it hit Steam, but forgot and ended up picking it up as part of a Humble Bundle some time later. Unfortunately though, it was well over a year before I was even able to get beyond the first level.

You see as soon as I unlocked Eddie's hotrod vehicle, “The Deuce,” and began driving through the hordes of enemies that got in my way, my display driver would crash. I would continue to hear sounds from the game as it continued to play and could pause or otherwise interact with it as normal. However after five to ten seconds, the entire game would lock up and the whole PC became unresponsive. Needless to say, I held the power button down a lot during my many attempts to get the game to work over several weeks.

It was this, three minutes of cut-scenes, followed by black.

This was a problem a lot of people ultimately ran into with Brutal Legend, with a thread on the Steam forums stretching through 15+ pages of people with the same graphical issue at the same rough point in the game. All of us it turned out had AMD GPUs, most of us high-up in the five series, though a few had the same problems with the six series too.

Double Fine did offer some basic ideas for fixes. Reinstalling the game, reinstalling Steam, reinstalling the OS, trying new graphics drivers, etc. Myself and others went above and beyond to get the game working, in some sort of stubborn attempt to get our money's worth from the game, but no avail. No matter what we tried, nobody was successful – or if they were, no one came back to tell the rest of us and Double Fine, for all of its efforts was unable to duplicate the issue and without that, what could it do to help?

Ultimately, I gave up, after a few weeks of trying an hour here and there just to see if I'd imagined things. That left Brutal Legend sat in my Steam library, greyed out and out of reach – though with a ridiculous three hours of play-time, despite 90 per cent of that taking place within a five minute period after my save and before the crash.

“What do we do now?” “What do you mean? Now we can play the game.”

Until over a year later, when I ended up getting ahold of a 280X as part of an upgrade for my ailing system and I remembered the little game that couldn't. As I approached the fateful spot, I was pretty sceptical it would work, but it did and I ended up having a fun fortnight or so of gameplay out of it. Not exactly worth the wait, but it was certainly entertaining and I was glad to finally cross it off my list of games to play, especially considering it had defeated me time and again so long before.

KitGuru Games: Omni-movement culminates 30 years of FPS innovation

Black Ops 6 is officially here, bringing the innovative new Omni-movement system to the game. While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.

  1. The delta force games use to do my head in some times they ran fine other times wouldn’t work at all and on one system I had it wouldn’t play the first game at all no matter what I did

  2. Crysis 1, and Crysis Warhead never worked for me. Never fixed it either

  3. Dirt 3, Operation Flashpoint Red River and the other one. Had serious issues with GFWL even though games like Dark Souls ran without an issue.

This year, for some strange reason even without reinstalling windows or doing any major software change, all three games decided to run.

  4. RAGE, because that was before I join UnifL, and the Drivers from HP are shit.
Honestly, it wouldn’t run because the default drivers had issues with OpenGL.

http://www.leshcatlabs/ if you have a laptop with switchable.

  5. Had issues with Operation Flashpoint: Red River, never launched or went beyond the introductory video, also the first Soul Reaver never worked, the character would keep spinning in circles when used on any joystick, not even Joy2Key would fix this issue.

  6. Metro2033 doesn’t work for me. Waste of money.

  7. Battlefield 4. It’s still broken.

  8. (It’s just Crysis. You don’t need to add the “1”)

  9. I what way? I have 600+ hours in the game, the last couple of patches have fixed the majority of “netcode” problems.

  10. Call of Duty GHOSTS.

    The game is a pos.

  11. Shame about Brutal Legend. I’m on NV so didn’t have any issues – in fact, I found it to be pretty well optimised, beyond the lack of graphics options. It’s a great game too!

E: and no, I’ve never had a game I’ve been unable to get working. I’m stubborn like that.

  12. I’ve never got the SP of COD: Advanced Warfare working. Just gives a DirectX error and crashes on startup. Multiplayer seems to work more or less, although not well. Apparently overclocking my 840M causes crashes, but it can’t hit 30fps at minimum settings without overclocking. This is a system that can max COD: Black Ops 2, Borderlands 2, and many other games at 60fps, but the framerate dies on COD: AW and Just Cause 2 (50fps on minimum).

Battlefield 4 works it is just very temperamental. Sometimes it can connect sometimes it can’t.
For the first 3 months it wouldn’t let me play multi-player because apparently I had a cheat that punk buster could detect but I couldn’t.

  14. It took me upgrading my entire PC for Mortal Kombat 2011 to work. It would always crash my display drivers during the cutscenes in story mode and any time I tried playing online. Never understood why. Simply worked once I got my new laptop though.

Also, I never got Elder Scrolls Online to launch. Even sent QA a video of it crashing as soon as I launched it, and they simply said “sorry” and something about molag baal causing mayhem or some crap.

  16. I could never get GTA4 to work with a i5 750 and ATI 5770 back in 2009, microstuttering was a bitch and inevitabley led me back towards consoles. Never fear though, I saw the light at the announcement of the “new” consoles and immediatley jumped back into the PC gaming scene.

  17. remember back in the day when i couldnt get allied assault to work, cause i needed a AGP card 🙁

  18. I think ‘back in my day’ means before the 2000s. When gaming was primarily done through a console with no chance of patching the game after release.

Now with tonnes of PC gamers with lots of different kit its a lot more difficult to program for every combination and permutation.

There were arguably 3 consoles in any one generation that meant a choice of up to 3 computer configurations.

Those were the days though… Where expansion packs were more than just a level…

  19. Dragon Age: Inquisition still can’t handle OC-d VGA-s and only runs at certain gfx settings. Try something different and you get a nice directx error. Still one of the best games around though… 😀
