Google might be working on a VR version of Android

Android may soon be hitting virtual reality headsets as Google has apparently tasked a group of engineers with developing a version of the operating system that can power virtual reality applications. The team currently consists of ‘tens of engineers', according to the Wall Street Journal report.

The report cites two anonymous sources and so far, Google has declined to comment on the story, which includes some details about how a virtual reality version of Android might look once it becomes public. Google has dabbled in virtual reality already with the launch of Google Cardboard, which was a low cost DIY solution.

Google Cardboard was downloaded over one million times and this month's Game Developers Conference was pretty much dominated by new virtual reality technology. It was already clear that VR was becoming a big deal after Facebook bought Oculus for $2 billion.

However, more and more competitors are starting to make headway with their own virtual reality technologies. It makes sense that Google also wants to get in on the action before the market becomes too congested.
