Have you been pestered by cold callers lately? If you live in the UK then chances are the answer is yes, but never fear, as the government has announced a new change to traditional legislation that will make it far easier to take the companies responsible to task.
Even though last year some 175,000 complaints were made to the Information Commissioner's Office – the body responsible for upholding the “information rights,” of the public – about cold calls and text messages, very few of the companies responsible faced penalties as their actions weren't covered by the letter of the law. Traditionally, the legislation govering their management meant that only companies which were found to be causing “substantial damage or substantial distress,” to a consumer were hit with fines or other measures, but with a change to the law, that line has been struck out. Now it will be much easier for the ICO to penalise firms that bother customers with scams or sales calls.

“For far too long companies have bombarded people with unwanted marketing calls and texts, and escaped punishment because they did not cause enough harm,” said digital economy minster, Ed Vaizey (via the BBC).
“This change will make it easier for the Information Commissioner's Office to take action against offenders and send a clear message to others that harassing consumers with nuisance calls or texts is just not on.”
The move also may eventually see it made a legal requirement that those making sales calls use a line with an identifiable number, so they can be held accountable for any anxiety or distress caused – something that elderly people or those home-bound often experience.
The ICO has the ability to fine companies up to half a million pounds for nuisance calls, though it has only issued penalties totalling £815,000 since 2012 against nine companies. With its new powers, that could change in the near future.

Where I work, we get about 4 calls a day about PPI. We even know the numbers to ignore now.
We once had someone come through to our IT guy saying he was from MS, that was pretty funny.
but i had tremendous fun seeing how much patience these cold callers had.When they asked me to click on the start button on the bottom left hand corner and i said your left or mine?.
Yeah, sure .. and what a load of ole fanny socks – whatever those may be. Only the stupid, dumbe, and strange bedfellows of vested interests will dare declare that, “Well sweet butt-cheeks, I suppose eet ist better late than nevah, eh?”
Yes, they’ve got away with eet once again by pretending to cover old ground as new but now with a firmer slap in the wrist [You naughty Boy !], they are goin’ to get away with it and “Jest B4 re-election too.”
Zounds, what a clever-dickie ploy, these politokos and their Strange Bedfellows are. Eh? And btw, how is that old fanny about, “Saving Da Children” coming along, eh? About bloody time, the better half is constantly told about the compensation she can get after the car she doesn’t even own got hit.
Can anyone translate this? I think he’s onto something but I’m a bit rusty and can’t understand all of it…
I love these ones, I like to keep them going as long as possible and then when they ask for details about the car/the accident I say something like “I don’t remember the accident, so you can put amnesia down as a symptom, I also don’t remember owning a car”
Same with the Microsoft ones, I like to keep them going as long as possible, and then boot a virtual machine to let them “do what they like”, but with limited access to internet/drives/etc. I usually get called an expletive by the end of it. It’s great as they try to delete my documents to get back at me, only to find they’re locked out or can only get the sample documents, which one of them actually deleted in desperation.
