Nvidia is considering GeForce GTX Titan X ‘Ultra’ with hybrid cooling – rumour

Nvidia Corp.’s GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card offers extreme performance that is enough for playing all modern games even in ultra-high-definition resolutions. However, true enthusiasts never settle with any level of performance and they constantly demand more. Apparently, Nvidia is mulling about something it can offer to those, who are not completely satisfied with the current flagship product.

The Santa Clara, California-based developer of graphics processing units and application processors is considering to launch a version of its GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card with a hybrid cooling solution akin to that used on AMD’s Radeon R9 295X2 as well as on select EVGA GeForce GTX 980 graphics adapters. The system, which will combine the advantages of liquid cooling with air cooling, is expected to let Nvidia set considerably higher clock-rates of the GM200 GPU to further increase its performance.

Bits & Chips web-site claims citing sources close to Nvidia that usage of hybrid cooling system could allow Nvidia to increase default frequencies of the GeForce GTX Titan X (1000MHz/1075MHz – base/boost) by around 250MHz, which is a significant improvement. The hypothetical GeForce GTX Titan X Ultra or GeForce GTX Titan X Black could let Nvidia further increase the price of its top-of-the-range solution as well as to offer unbeatable performance. At present chances that such graphics card will emerge on the market are not very high. However, should AMD’s Radeon R9 390X beat the GeForce GTX Titan X across-the-board, Nvidia could retaliate by releasing an improved version of its Titan X with better cooling and higher clock-rates.

In fact, Sycom, a Japan-based PC maker, recently started to offer its clients GeForce GTX Titan X graphics cards with a closed-loop liquid cooling system, reports Hermitage Akihabara. The board retains casing of the original cooling system and heat spreaders that cover memory chips. EVGA and Overclockers UK offer GeForce GTX Titan X graphics cards equipped with waterblocks by EKWB for owners of custom liquid-cooling systems.

Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: It is noteworthy that with its GeForce GTX Titan series of products Nvidia does not really endorse custom cooling systems by its partners. Therefore, instead of offering them a hybrid cooling solution with “GeForce GTX Titan X Ultra”, Nvidia could simply allow makers of graphics cards to install their coolers on the GeForce GTX Titan X products and factory overclock them beyond default rates.

  3. Because EK waterblocks don’t exist…

  4. This card runs way too damn hot. 83 degrees Celsius underload is not acceptable at this price point. In order to get the card running at 61-67, you have to run the fan @ 80% and have it sound like a Boeing Airbus. I’m on my way as we speak to take my card back and be done with all this hype. The card physical make up is holding it back from ever performing at full potential. So sad I tell ya…

  5. 87 is actually allright for blower cards since they are designed to be ran in SLI and push all the head out of the back of the case also Nvida don’t like board partners messing with there awful reference coolers same with Nvidia shame Blower coolers are loud as fuck I can confirm this (Sapphire 6970 2Gb) runs at like 67 idle and 70/80 under light load.

    It is quite sad 🙁

  6. That’s true to an extent and all, but it renders the card gimped at those temps because it just lowers its boost clock and then you have a half assed performing card at those temps. In the case of my titanx I cringe and worry my ass off when I feel those Vrams and you can fry an egg on them. Because my GTx 690 didn’t always run so damn hot, aluminum is the way to go if you are gonna do blower style cards. Dissipates the heat better. I’m waiting on that corsair liquid coming bracket, those issues decided to release one for the 700 series just now. When we have been well ahead in the 900 series. In definitely water cooling this half ass shroud
